Kat stood next to her mom, her ears bleeding from all the excited squealing coming from her left. "Are you sure about wearing that to school?" she asked him for what was probably the tenth time that morning.

The boy rolled his eyes. "Everyone wore costumes last year, they will this year, too."

She just shrugged. "Whatever you say."

Kat went about her morning as usual, getting a ride with Jonathan and Will, then studying in the library during her free period.

She had gone in the bathroom halfway through the period and as she was washing her hands, Nancy came into the bathroom. Kat smiled. "Hey, how are you?"

Nancy didn't reply, she just kept that same sad smile that had been stuck to her face since last fall.

Kat took a step forward. "Wha—Nance? What's wrong?"

"I just can't keep doing this. Pretending like everything's okay."

Kat knew what Nancy was talking about. She fully understood what she felt like. She nodded. "It feels like everyone forgot."

Nancy's expression changed to looking somewhat relieved, but that same sad look in her eyes, that didn't go away; Kat didn't know if it ever would. She wondered if she had that same look too. "Her parents are the only ones who haven't. And now they're going to sell their house, and they're going to spend the rest of their lives looking for her. It's destroying them."

Kat leaned against the wall of the bathroom, feeling the cold tile on her hands. "What are you saying? You wanna tell them?" Kat asked, but it wasn't really a question.
