SCENE: GREY SLOAN MEMORIAL

(Amber enters the hospital wearing her green sheath dress ready for the intern mixer)

Voice: Amber!

(Amber turns around to see Jo approaching her)

Jo: Hey I don't know if you remember me, I'm-

Amber: Jo, yeah, I remember you, your Alex's girlfriend, right?

Jo: That's right, wow you look really nice.

Amber: Thanks so do you. I'm guessing you're going to this mixer too.

Jo: Well, there's an open bar and free food so yeah. Are you nervous? I remember I was nervous when I went to this thing before I started.

Amber: Yeah, I'm hella nervous, I tried on four dresses and only settled with this one because I was afraid of being late, any tips?

Jo: Umm don't tell the attendings how much you admire them because that will make you a brown noser, don't go past three drinks unless you want to start your first day carrying a banana bag, and most importantly do not hook up with anyone you meet at the party, intern or attending wise cause that'll cause a whole lot of awkward for you tomorrow.

Amber: (Chuckles) Why would I sleep with one of my bosses before my first day? It's a hospital not a brothel.

Jo: (Mutters under her breath) Yeah, it's supposed to be isn't it.

Amber: (Not hearing Jo) What?

Jo: Hmm. Anyways just be yourself and don't be nervous, the real thing starts tomorrow so worry about that.

Amber: Thanks. Hey where's Alex?

Jo: He is...taking a sick day. Which is code for my friend bought a sweet boat and invited me to join him and a bunch of other guys for a gentleman's day out. So, how's Seattle treating you? Is it any different than New York?

Amber: Seattle is good, I went to the space needle and that art museum with the glass stuff.

Jo: (Gasp) Oh I love that place!

Amber: Me too! This place is a lot roomier than Manhattan and I almost forgot what clean streets looked like.

(Both women enter the cafeteria holding the mixer)

Amber: Wow! I can't believe they actually do this for us, most hospitals just give you an orientation packet via email.

Jo: Yeah, that's what I thought too, until I figured out it's a way for the attendings to decide which are functional human beings and which are not.

(Jo's phone beeps and she checks it)

Jo: No no no no no!

(Jo runs out of the room leaving Amber behind)

Amber: Okay then I guess I'll drink alone.

(Amber approaches the bar with the bartender)

Amber: Red wine please.

(She looks next to her and sees a dark-skinned man enjoying his beer surveying the area)

Amber: Hi, Amber Karev, NYU

(She holds her hand out and he shakes it)

Vik: Vik Roy, Yale.

Amber: Are you gonna be an intern here?

Vik: Yep, I'm gonna be a surgeon, what about you what program are you in?

Amber: (Smiling) I'm in surgery too, I'm gonna be an intern.
