Chapter 44

You were terrified.

Among other things but you were mostly terrified.

Alarms blarred in your ears as he carried you to your room, a familiar yet thicker tension around the both of you that made it hard to think, let alone breathe.

You were suddenly hyper-aware of the way he held you, the way his fingers felt against your skin and the way they sparked a fire that lit your heart, the flames inevitably spreading to the rest of your body.

The silence felt tangible but entirely too thick to cut through with any weapon imaginable.

Your head lifted off his shoulder slightly to watch the view ahead, thinking maybe if you focused on the path ahead, his touch wouldn't feel so misleading.

But it was in vain, you had zoned out and even that led you to thoughts of the straw hat.

Luffy is different now, more serious and less blatant...his unreadable to me now..

Its lonely.

Truth be told, it made you sad because his smile was just about the best thing you've ever layed your eyes on.

The fact that you saw it less killed you.

Was it because of you?

The thought brought a frown to your expression, an ache poked at your heart with a taunting hostility as you tried to block your own thoughts.

"do I make you sad?", his shoulders tense up, almost flinching at the words that left your mouth so suddenly.

You hear him swallow and it makes you regret opening your mouth.

"No", he finally replies, the lack of elaboration making your teeth sink into the inside of your cheeks as the silence makes it's home around you both once again.

"I don't know much right now but I do know that seeing you makes me happy"

Your eyes flutter up to him, his eyes already on you when you do and it stuck. A burning sensation creeping up from your neck and finding itself in your cheeks almost instantly.

Your lips curling up when you noticed the truth in his eyes.

I suppose that'll never change. How strikingly honest his eyes always are.

He stares at you for a few moments, almost dazed like as he took in your expression before his own lips curled up into a wide and giddy smile.

There he goes again...

Melting you almost entirely with just this.

A breathless exhale slowly escapes  your mouth in response to his crinkled up eyes and scrunched nose. A warm and heavy feeling clutching your heart as you watched him laugh, looking at you with those big black doe eyes.

"we're here.", he says gently, his smile softer now but still prominent enough to make your body weak. "Hm? Oh.", you blink and looked around, realizing that the world around you actually existed as you let out an involuntary, soft but embarassingly bubbly giggle, the sound of it making you cringe immediately after it exited your mouth.

What the fuck was that.

Terrified that when he let down, your knees would buckle.

He chuckles, his fingers laced against your waist as he put you down.

"you should sleep." you nod without taking a step.

The hands that lingered on your waist didn't allow you to follow the order, swallowing softly in response, a tilt of your head with a small smile to show your confusion as you stared up at him but even then..
