The Touch

I surrendered to slumber once again, only to be roused by the still-blaring TV. Groggily, I opened my eyes to find Kyle sitting beside me, his gaze fixed on the screen. "You're up," I murmured, covering my face with my hand, aware that my disheveled hair and sleepy expression made me look less than radiant.

"Yeah, I just thought I'd stick around for a while," Kyle replied, his eyes never leaving the TV.

I rubbed the sleep from my eyes, trying to shake off the haze. "How long have I been asleep?" I asked, my voice still husky from slumber.

"For about an hour," Kyle replied, his tone neutral.

I winced, knowing he must have seen me in all my sleeping glory, which wasn't exactly my finest moment. But I was curious. "And how long have you been sitting here?" I asked, trying to sound nonchalant.

Kyle's response was matter-of-fact. "About an hour, since I was sleeping too."

I fell silent, not wanting to seem too inquisitive or demanding. The TV droned on in the background, filling the awkward pause.

As we sat together in silence, the TV provided a soothing background hum. Kyle finally broke the quiet, his gaze wandering around the room. "You know, I love it here," he said, his voice filled with sincerity.

I raised an eyebrow, curiosity piqued. "What's to like? It's sometimes boring, especially since my mom isn't around most of the time," I replied, my tone a touch skeptical.

Kyle's eyes locked onto mine, his smile warm. "That's the great part – you make your own rules. And you're a nice person, too." His hand brushed against mine, sending unexpected goosebumps down my arm. "Being here with you has been the best part of our project," he said, his voice low and gentle.

The room seemed to fade away, leaving only the two of us, suspended in a moment of tender connection. I felt a flutter in my chest, my heart skipping a beat as our eyes held a silent understanding.
