Kyle's POV:
I trudged through the front door, my heart sinking as I spotted Dad already home, his expression stern. I knew I was in for a rough night.
"Where have you been?" he demanded, his voice low and angry.
I hesitated, trying to downplay my tardiness. "I just had to stop somewhere for a few things. Nothing serious, Dad."
But he wasn't having it. "Kyle, I've had enough of your excuses! You're always late, always slacking off. Get out of my sight, and don't expect any supper tonight. You can either eat the bread on the counter or go back to wherever you came from and eat there!"
He turned away, his gaze cold and dismissive. I felt a familiar sting, wondering why he was always so hard on me. Sometimes, I doubted whether I was even his son.
I know why my father hates me. It's because he thinks I'm responsible for my mother's death. We were in the car, I was being rushed to the hospital with a fever, and my mother was driving because my father had lost his driver's permit. I remember her looking back at me in the back seat, her worry and distraction evident. And then, in a split second, everything changed.
I awoke in a hospital bed, alone and disoriented. A nurse entered, urging me to go back to sleep, but I had too many questions. "Where's Mum? Where's Dad? I want to know!" I demanded.
My father walked in, his eyes cold and accusatory. "Your mother is dead, Kyle. You killed her. If only you weren't such a sickly child, she'd still be alive. But no, you had to go and do something stupid."
Tears streamed down my face as my father's harsh words pierced my heart. The nurse intervened, holding me close. "Sir, you're being too hard on the kid."
But my father continued, relentless. "Kyle, your mother died a week ago in a car accident. An accident you caused. And I'm glad you didn't get to say goodbye to her. I swear, I would have thrown you into that grave with her."
The nurse's voice rose in protest. "Sir, that's enough!"
My father's parting shot still haunts me: "At least he knows the truth now." The nurse held me tight, whispering reassurances, but my father's words had already left their mark.
The memory of my father's cruel words lingered, haunting me every time I saw him. They echoed in my mind before I fell asleep, a painful reminder of his hatred towards me.
But amidst the darkness, I found solace in Nurse Amy, who had become my unlikely friend and confidante. I visited her every weekend, cherishing the warmth and kindness she showed me. She was the only family I had left, and I clung to her support like a lifeline.
In my darkest moments, I wondered if death might be a better option. Perhaps I could join my mother, and we could be together again. But deep down, I knew she wouldn't want me to follow her into the grave. She would want me to live, to find happiness and fulfillment in life.
So I waited patiently, praying that one day I would see her again. As I lay in bed, I closed my eyes and whispered a silent plea: "Mum, I'll keep going, no matter how hard it gets. I'll make you proud, and maybe someday we'll be togeher again."
With that thought, I drifted off to sleep, holding onto the hope that had become my lifeline.
