As I walked into the house with Kyle behind me, I couldn't help but feel a sense of trepidation. The lights were already on, indicating that Mum was home. I entered slowly, my heart racing with anticipation.

"Shawn, I've been waiting for you," Mum said, her voice stern and disapproving. "Where have you been? And what's going on with the house? It's a mess!"

Her eyes scanned the room, taking in the disarray. I knew I was in trouble.

But as she continued to lecture me, I suddenly remembered the events of the morning and the previous night. Ella had made a mess of the kitchen, and I had disorganized the house while trying to help Kyle with his wounds.

"Mum, let me explain—" I began, hoping to defuse the situation.

However, Mum's expression remained unyielding, her hand still planted on her hip. "Explain? You'd better have a good explanation, young man."

As I struggled to find the right words to explain the state of the house, Mum's gaze shifted to Kyle, who was standing quietly behind me. Her expression softened, and she spoke in a calm tone, "Ah, hi, are you a friend of Shawn's?"

I knew that Mum's desire to present herself well in front of others would work in my favor. Kyle hesitated for a moment before responding, "Y-yes, we're friends."

Mum's eyes narrowed slightly as she turned back to me, her tone laced with a hint of surprise. "Shawn, you didn't mention you were bringing a friend over."

I quickly intervened, sensing an opportunity to diffuse the tension. "Mum, this is Kyle. Kyle, this is my mum," I said, making the introductions as smoothly as possible.

"Oh, silly me," Mum said with a laugh, waving her hand dismissively. "I'm really sorry for acting a little wild in front of you. I'm just a little tired."

"No problem, Mrs...." Kyle replied gently, his voice trailing off as he realized he didn't know my mum's name.

"So, are you staying for dinner?" Mum asked Kyle as she headed towards the kitchen to start preparing a meal.

Before Kyle could respond, I quickly interjected, "Yeah, and I was hoping he could stay for the night too. We have some work to finish up, and tomorrow is a school day." I added, trying to sound as convincing as possible.

Mum paused, her expression skeptical. "But won't his parents be mad about it?" she asked, her eyes narrowing slightly.

I quickly turned to Kyle for backup. "No, don't worry about it. He lives with his dad, and I think he won't be there tonight, right, Kyle?" I asked, seeking his approval.

Kyle nodded in agreement. "Mm, yeah, that's right."

Mum seemed to accept this explanation, her expression softening. "Well, I guess it's fine then. I'll make some quick pasta for us, and Shawn, you can show your friend to your room, then come back and help me fix up."
