Chapter 3:
The next thing I knew I heard my mothers' voice and it was very faint so I could tell she was in her room.
I think she was on the phone because I couldn't hear the other side of the conversation and I heard her say "Ok, thank you bye."
Then I heard a door open and my mom stepped out sighing.
My mom quickly looked over into my bedroom and at me.
I probably was really pale; I already knew what it was about, well not all of it. I knew it was about the doctor because of the look on my mother's face but I didn't know what he said to her.
"It's ok Nadine; Mr. Reed got an appointment with Mr. Hale." My mother said looking sick.
"Really?" I asked my eyes getting huge.
"Yeah, Tuesday at 11:00. Mr. Reed told Mr. Hale your situation and he wanted to get you in immediately, that's the quickest he can get you in." My mom said nodding. "You're having a CAT scan tomorrow at 9:30."
My heart started beating faster again; I was so scared this was going to be the real test to see if I had cancer.
All of a sudden I blurted out "I'm scared." I told my mom, as she walked into my room and sat at the end of my bed.
"Me too." She said grabbing my hand.
I slowly sat up and put my arms out by my sides for a hug.
She sighed sadly as she reached for me too and hugged me tightly.
"I love you so much Nadine." She whispered.
When we pulled away we both had tears in our eyes.
I just let it all out.
"I'm so scared. I hope I'm just sick, I'm so young I can't die." I said fiercely wiping away the tears from my cheeks.
"It's ok, hunny, you're going to be fine." My mother reassured me as she rubbed soothing circles on my back.
"No, I'm not!" I said sitting up quickly and looking at her. "I heard you and dad last night." I said with more tears pouring down my face.
"What? What are you talking about?" She asked her eyebrows furrowed down.
"Mom! Stop lying to me please?!?!?" I yelled choking up with tears.
"Alright, you want to know the truth?" She asked her eyes puffy from crying.
"Yes." I said nodding, confirming I wanted to hear the truth.
"My parents were exposed to a nuclear power plant that exploded. Even though it wasn't near where we lived it got to my parents quickly, so we started traveling to get away from it and for a while we thought it was fine. We all hadn't gone to the doctor in 5 months because we were traveling so we didn't really have a doctor to go to. Those five months we traveled in our family RV trying to find a home their tumors got larger; and on top of all that they were heavy smokers. So when we finally got a house we settled in and everything and my mother started getting sick." My mom stopped for a second and put her head in her hands crying. She raised her head up sniffling. "So we went to the doctor and they found a tumor, they tested my father and I too and my father had it also but smaller. They started to get chemotherapy for it but it was too late." She said sniffling and crying more.
"We moved around in a RV too." I said breathing heavily.
We went on a family vacation a year ago, in our family RV (that ended up breaking down later on.) We wanted to travel to different places and we were gone for 2 months.
"I know." She said looking down.
"Mom why didn't you tell me earlier?" I asked her with tears in my eyes.
"I have to go; I can't talk about this anymore." She said standing up and walking out of my room and shutting the door behind her.
Oh my gosh! Why was she ignoring me?! I couldn't believe this was happening! I really did have it, there was no doubt about it, and eventually I was going to die.
I laid my head down on my bed and I cried uncontrollably, I was going to die; I hadn't done anything that I always wanted to do. Get an autograph from Matt Damon, have a boyfriend that's really sweet and likes the kind of stuff I like, and to dance just as beautiful as my mother did.
After a little while my eyes started feeling heavy and I let them close.
I needed some rest.
When I opened my eyes again I looked over at my alarm clock.
1:30 p.m.
I had slept 2 hours and I was thirsty, so I got up from my bed and tiptoed down the hall and the stairs.
When I came about halfway down the steps I heard the TV on in the living room.
I walked down the rest of the way and turned to the right.
My messy strawberry blonde hair was falling in my eyes as I slowly and quietly stepped into the living room.
Turning to stand right in front of the couch I saw no one.
Seeing the remote on the floral printed, beige couch I reached over to grab hold of the remote.
After having it in my grasp I flipped off the TV and threw the remote back onto the couch.
I sleepily walked into the kitchen to get a drink of water.
I got a cup out of the cabinet and turned on the water.
Letting it run into the cup I stood there staring out the window and watching the darkness.
I guess I had watched out the window too long because the water started spilling over onto my hand.
Turning off the water I put the cup to my mouth and looked inside and saw it wasn't water, it was blood.
Dropping the cup and screaming the cup hit the floor and broke sending blood to spill all over the place, the cabinet under the counters and the trashcan where it had splashed.
I ran to the garage where the broom and mop was and flipped the light on.
Seeing blood dripping from the ceiling I screamed again and jetted upstairs and laid back down in my bed.
This was a dream, I kept telling myself, but was it?
