Chapter 27:
I walked over to my closet and grabbed a hat and slipped it on.
Ever since I had lost so much of my hair I never left the house without a hat on.
Walking down the stairs I made my way to my mother.
"Mom?" I said.
"Oh, hello hunny, are you going somewhere?" My mother asked me gently.
"Yeah, I'll be back in a little while." I said.
"Where are you going?" My mother asked, trying to stay calm.
She didn't like me leaving the house by myself, and not telling her where I was going, but I guess I had thought I wouldn't have to tell her that time because she had been letting me go more places by myself.
"On a bike ride." I said.
"Oh." My mother said gently just before her face softened.
"I'm just going around..." I trailed off and my mother nodded as she was cutting up celery.
I didn't tell my mother that my eye sight had been getting bad, or my hearing, I didn't want to worry her....I thought for a moment looking at her.
'Should I tell her?' I thought.
I didn't like lying to her, at all.
I sighed quietly and leaned in towards my mother's cheek and kissed it.
"Love you mom." I told her before walking to the front door.
My father wasn't home; he went on a business trip and would be gone for a couple of days.
I missed him terribly and felt bad about going against what he told me but it wasn't like I was going to see Mason or anything.
I had needed to clear my mind for days and couldn't, so right when my father left for his trip I asked my mother if I could go on a walk and she said no at first, it took a lot of convincing to get her to say yes but I finally managed to do it.
After pulling my dusty old bike out of the shed I hopped on and rode down the driveway.
Turning the corner I started pedaling hard down the street.
Our neighborhood was very small, which didn't really give you enough time to clear your mind, so I decided I'd go down a different route that time.
I biked down a street I had never biked down before, and nothing looked familiar.
About 25 minutes later when I biked down a hill it was pretty steep and I went to put the brakes on a little bit because I was flying down the hill but the petal broke off and I screamed the whole way down.
What I didn't realize was I was headed right towards a bench and a bit beyond that was a lake.
"Omigosh!" I screamed.
I was going to swerve and purposely fall off the bike and into the grass but I saw the bench at the last second and I had already hit it.
I screamed again, but in agony that time because my leg right on my shin somehow had been smashed between a sharp broken part of the bike and the bench.
I guessed it had gone into my skin because it hurt really bad.
Then I was flying for the lake.
The horrible thing was, I couldn't swim!
I was thinking on my way to the water, I was thinking, I'm going to die, I'm going to drown, I'm going to bleed to death.
Then I hit the water, the part I dreaded the most.
My head sunk under immediately from the impact, my body was sinking to the bottom and my heart was racing.
I longed for air so much.
Air, Air, I need air, I kept telling myself.
I was so scared.
Stay calm. I told myself.
I couldn't, I was thrashing under water and trying so much to get above the water and breathe.
'Please?' I thought. "PLEASE, SOMEONE SAVE ME???" I thought.
My legs were kicking, my arms were swinging around and I was almost crying it was so horrible.
Then I stopped moving and calmed down.
My eyes were slipping closed, and I let them.
All I could remember was darkness after that.
It was another minute before I felt air being blown into my mouth and hands on my chest.
5 pushes, air, pause, 5 pushes, air, pause, 5 pushes, air, and hands were laid on my chest again.
I opened my eyes and quickly sat up, spitting out tons of water.
My eyes were blurry and I wiped them to see a flustered, wet Mason sitting next to me.
"Mason?" I whispered.
I could barely speak.
I cleared my throat.
"Yeah." Mason said breathing heavily.
His hair was stuck to his forehead and the tips of his hair was dripping water down his face.
"You?" I asked, barely breathing. "Pulled me out?"
He nodded violently.
There was an awkward silence for a minute.
"Thank you." I said slowly.
Trying to stand I pushed down on the ground and screamed in agony as a sharp pain coursed through my entire body starting from my leg.
"Oh my gosh!" Mason screamed looking at my shin.
It was already swelling and it was purple, and bleeding.
"Are you ok?!?!?" He screamed his voice cracking.
"Yeah, just call 911." I said before his eyes got huge.
I frowned.
"What is it?" I asked biting my lip to hold in a scream from the extreme pain I was in.
"My phone got ruined when I jumped in to save you." He said.
I moaned in my mouth a little, and cursed myself for even going on that bike ride.
"Maybe there's a payphone." I said hopefully.
"No." He said frowning. "Even if there was I don't have any change on me."
"What?!" I screamed. "You're rich and you don't have any change on you?!" I yelled angrily.
His eyebrows furrowed down.
"Well, I always pay with cash, I NEVER have any change on me, If I need tax money I just give them some more bills and if I get change back I either throw it away, throw it on the ground or give it to a homeless guy." He said.
"What??!?!? Never mind! Don't you dare think that everything is alright now." I said before he frowned.
"I saved your life though!" He whined.
"Yeah, and I am SO grateful to you for that but you lied to me Mason!" I said, raising my voice.
He didn't say anything; he just sat down and looked at me, looking ashamed.
"I'm really sorry, Nadine, I really am, and I don't know if we'll EVER be the same again, or if you'll ever trust me again but will you at least forgive me? PLEASE? Everything I told you was the truth, about the car and breaking into that lady's house." He said.
I covered my eyes with my hands that were scratched up, and sighed again.
After putting my hands down I looked at him and into his big puppy dog eyes.
I nodded, showing him I forgave him, I should've given him a little slack he did save my life after all.
