Chapter 37: Three weeks
It had been 6 days since the doctor scheduled my surgery for the 15th just 2 weeks and 1 day until possibly the last day of my life.
My mother came in my room with her eyes swollen and red.
"What are you doing?" She asked me.
"Trying to practice this one move Mason was teaching me." I said.
It was very hard I had to do a 360 spin exactly to the rhythm of the music, and then land in a curtsy while staying completely balanced, and then I had to jump with my foot up in the air, lean back and do a back bend but it was next to impossible without a partner.
I fell after doing the jump, and I groaned, and stood up and started doing it again.
Then suddenly the doorbell rang.
"I'll get it." I said to my mom.
I ran downstairs and opened it; it was a dude with a package in his hand.
"Hi." The old guy said.
"Hi." I said back.
"Package for Nadine Morgan?" He asked looking at me; I guess he knew it was me.
I smiled and took the pen from him.
"That's me." I said. "Thanks."
I signed my name and the date and he smiled and after returning the pen to him he said "You're welcome" and walked away to his truck.
I ran upstairs with the package and grabbed a pocket knife that was on my dresser.
My father had bought it for me for my 15th birthday, along with mace, a Taser, a cellphone, and all kinds of stuff you could use for self-defense against an attacker. Ever since that thing with that guy at the park I started taking that stuff with me everywhere. I never really felt like there was a need to have that stuff with me but after that I knew there was.
As I was pulling it along the tape I accidently ran over my finger.
Blood dripped on the carpet.
After sucking on my finger until it turned purple I pulled the cardboard flaps back and under a bunch of packing paper was a black dance outfit.
I looked on the outside of the box and the return address was Masons address.
Putting it against my body I smiled.
"It's beautiful" I said out loud to myself, I wondered where my mom was, I guessed she had left my room when I was downstairs.
I ran over shutting my door and tried it on.
The top part was shaped like a one piece bathing suit and it had slits across the stomach.
One side went off the shoulder.
The other part of the outfit was a floor length black skirt with snappy buttons all the way down.
I think I had seen a dancer on tv wear a skirt like that before, her Mexican partner ripped it off of her when she spun around and underneath the skirt was an outfit similar to mine, except it had holes all over the stomach area.
My father knocked on the door just as I put the skirt over it.
"Come in." I said to him.
He came in and his face went smiley to a, what in the world look.
"What's wrong?" I asked him.
"Why are you dressed like that?" He asked me surprised.
"Mason bought it for me and sent it in the mail." I told him.
He frowned.
"Take it off." He ordered me.
"Fine." I said ripping the skirt off.
"AHH!!" My dad said yelling and turning the other way.
"Relax dad I'm still dressed." I said.
He looked back at me peeking through his hand and he put his hands by his sides.
"I want you to send it back." He said.
"Why, dad?" I asked.
"Did you forget what he did to you?" My father said pointing at me.
"No, of course not but when I start dancing pro, I'm going to need an outfit." I said.
"We can buy you one just, don't wear that, unless you want to get slapped." He said shaking his head.
"What? You're gonna slap me?" I asked confused.
"No, you don't remember that song, and yes you get slapped if you're looking ho!" He said in a high pitch voice.
I started laughing.
"Oh, my, gosh dad!" I said pushing him.
He chuckled and walked out of the room.
What he said was funny but I was really mad he was making me send it back.
After taking it off I put it back in the box and put a letter in there saying
"Dear Mason, I know we haven't been talking and I was ecstatic to see a package from you for me, I tried it on and I really liked it but my dad caught me and told me to send it back. I appreciate that you bought it for me though, I've been working on that move you showed me, but it's kind of hard to do it by myself. I'd like to see you and maybe we can work things out, come to my house tonight at 7 if you don't come then I'll know that you meant what you said, and I'll never bother you again, I just have to know. Also there's something else I need to tell you, I'm having surgery in 8 days and I thought I should tell you, because there's not a good chance I'll live through it and I'm scared. Maybe, you might want to be there for support. Well, I hope to see you at the hospital and I guess that's all I have to say. Love
Nadine"
Then I taped it back up and put it by my dresser on the floor, then started the dance again.
Mason's POV:
It had been an entire week since I sent the outfit to Nadine and I received a package in the mail, seeing it was the same package, and Nadine had sent it back I became sad.
She really hated me now.
I refused to open the package it would just upset me even more.
I put the package in my basement and went back upstairs bumping into Elaine she laughed nervously.
"Oh, you scared me." She said running upstairs very fast paced.
She ran in the bathroom slamming the door shut behind her.
What had gotten into her?
Sometimes I just didn't get women.
Elaine was normally so easy to read.
What was with her? I was gonna get to the bottom of it.
