Chapter 14:

Mason sat there for a minute looking at the floor and then looked up at me with sadness in his eyes.

"You should probably go." He said in a whisper.

"Mason what did he do to you?" I asked very concerned.

"Please, let's go." He said standing up and turning to me. "I'll drive you home."

I stood also and followed him to the front door which he had opened for me.

Stepping outside I stood there on the porch while he locked his front door.

He walked me to his car and got in.

He didn't open the door for me that time.

Was he lying, when he said he wasn't mad at me?

I didn't know.

Feeling very ashamed of myself I stared out the window the whole ride to my house, watching the raindrops fall from the sky.

Pretty soon he arrived outside my house and parked there.

"Thank you for the dance lessons Mason." I said looking over at him.

He didn't say anything, he just sat there staring at nothing, and I unbuckled my seat belt.

"Bye." I whispered before stepping out of the car.

"I'll see you tomorrow?" I asked, he still didn't say anything.

I slammed the car door shut and stepped away from the car and as soon as I did he sped off.

Walking up the pathway by myself to the front door I sighed.

I finally made it to the door.

Knocking on the door gently the door sprung open.

"Hey dad." I said to my father as he looked me up and down.

I was dripping wet.

"Everything ok?" My mother asked from the living room.

"Yeah mom." I lied.

Coming around the corner my mother gasped. "Hunny, you're soaked." My mother said looking at me.

"Go put some dry clothes on." My mother added.

I nodded once and slowly walked up the stairs.

Stepping into my room and shutting the door behind me I stripped down, out of my wet clothes and into a pair of shorts and a long tee shirt.

I laid down in my bed and watched tv.

It was the only thing I could do to keep my mind off of Mason.

I felt so bad for snooping and reading his letter from his dad.

What could his dad have done though, abused him?

It must've been something really horrible because Mason didn't want to talk about it.

Would Mason even want to dance with me tomorrow? I thought.

Probably not.

The next day came, it was 6 and I got out of bed and went outside.

I sat there in the hammock for half an hour then finally I heard him coming up the stairs to my mailbox that hung right by my front door.

"Hi." I said but he didn't say anything.

I just sat there looking at him.

He still looked sad.

He still didn't say anything so I got up from the hammock and started walking to the front door.

I was going inside if he wasn't going to talk to me.

"My dad.." I heard as soon as my hand touched the door handle.

He sighed heavily and walked over to the hammock and sat down.

I took my hand off the door handle and went over and sat by him.

"He.... He killed my mother. I saw him do it. He shot her." Mason said looking down at the floor.

"What?" I asked gulping.

"He tried to kill me too but I got away, I ran away as far as possible and I stayed with my aunt until I was 15, by then he was in prison and then I moved out, into my fathers' second house. The other house was sold and I got the money from it, I used that money, for food, and clothes. I'm actually still living off of that money."

"Why did he do that?" I asked tearing up.

I felt so bad for Mason.

That must've been so traumatic for him.

"I don't know." He said sniffling.

"How old were you?" I asked sadly.

I was biting my cheek so hard.

I was trying not to cry.

"6" He choked out.

I put my hand on his back and pulled him closer to me.

He quickly pulled me into a bear hug and cried silently on my shoulder.

I sniffled as I wrapped my arms around him.

We sat there hugging for a moment or two, and then Mason pulled away.

"I got to get back to work." He said clearing his throat.

"Thanks." He said.

I nodded smiling a little.

"Mason?" I asked as he turned to face me.

"Yeah?" He asked with his eyes red from crying.

"I'm sorry." I said sadly.

He looked confused.

"For reading that letter and for your mom."

"It's alright." He said nodding.

"Thanks." I said nodding also.

"See you later." He said.

"Bye." I whispered before he walked away and out of sight.
