Chapter 15:
I slowly started to go back inside.
When I made my way inside I went into the living room where I ate gummy bears and popcorn and drank soda while watching 3 of my favorite movies, Titanic, Changeling, and Inception.
Hours later the Titanic credits rolled as I heard the phone ringing from the living room. I quickly got up from the couch pushing tons of tissues off of my lap before running to the phone.
"Hello?" I answered.
"Hello, is this Don Morgan?" The woman on the other line asked in a business-y voice.
"No, this is his daughter Nadine Morgan." I answered; a bit offended that she thought I was a man.
My voice wasn't even deep.
Or at least I didn't think it was.
"Well, I need to speak with a grown up, are your parents' home?" The woman asked gently.
"Yeah." I answered.
"Would you mind getting them on the phone for me?" The woman asked.
"What is this about anyway?" I asked changing the subject.
"I need to speak to a grownup will, you, please, go get one of your parents?" She asked sounding annoyed.
"Yeah, yeah, ok, don't get your granny panties in a bunch!" I said almost laughing before going upstairs.
I always wanted to say that to someone and I had finally got to say it.
I knocked on their bedroom door after running upstairs and they said to come in.
"Mom, dad, there's someone on the phone that wants to speak with you."
"Hunny, I have to answer the phone." My mom told my dad as he paused the show.
She picked up the phone that was by her bed.
"Hello?" I heard my mother say as I started walking down the staircase to make my way to the other phone.
I picked the phone off the desk and slowly and quietly put the phone to my ear.
"Mrs. Morgan I need you, your daughter and your husband to come back here for the results." The woman said as I froze.
I had cancer, my life was over.
Anytime they want you to come to the place to tell you the news then it's bad.
Slamming the phone down I ran out the front door.
Sitting on the front porch I leaned down putting my head into my arms and crying.
My mother came out after a minute or two and sat by me.
"I know you heard. You never were quiet when you listened in like that. I could always hear you breathing."
I looked over at her with tears in my eyes.
"I'm scared." I said sadly.
"Oh, hunny I am too but you still might not have it, and if you do, well, we'll all get through it together."
"Alright?" My mother asked me grabbing my face.
I nodded slowly and leaned in for a hug.
"Oh, baby it's alright." She reassured me as I cried into her lap.
"You need to get ready because we have to go in a little while." She said letting go of me.
"Ok." I whispered standing up.
I was walking inside when I heard a voice behind me.
"I love you sweetie." My mother said as my hand touched the door handle.
"I love you too mom." I said after turning around to face her.
She gave me a pleasant smile before standing up too and walking with me back into the house.
I went upstairs dressing into a pair of blue skinny jeans and my tight Beatles tee shirt .
I put on socks before going down stairs and hollering I'm ready.
My father came around the corner and down the steps before taking one look at me and smiling.
"My, you really have grown into a beautiful young woman Nadine." He said smiling.
"Thanks dad." I answered before pulling him into a bear hug.
He was still smiling as he stroked my hair.
"Love you."
"I love you too dad."
My father looked like he was going to cry when he was walking with me and my mother to the car.
This was going to be the real test.
Did I have it or not?
