Flat green landscapes and arrays of empty fields was a stark contrast from what Y/N was accustomed to after living in the city for so long.
The girl sat in the drivers seat, steering the wheel and looking out the windows as she absentmindedly sipped on the lemonade they picked up on the way.
Klaus sat in the back, leaning in between Five and Y/N as he fiddled with the radio, turning on a spunky song. Whatever it was called, Y/N felt like it suited him very much.
"This actually isn't so terrible," Five remarked, leaning his arm on Y/N's seat as he stared ahead at the empty road
"See? Told you," Klaus said, falling back and resting his head on his arms.
"Come to think of it, my whole life I've been under the gun. Missions for dad, working for the Commission, trying to survive the apocalypse. I was always looking around every corner, just waiting for the other shoe to drop," Five continued, glancing sideways as Y/N nodded slowly, fixated on her driving. "It's nice to just breathe."
"Retirement suits you," Y/N hummed, tracing her finger around the leather on the wheel.
"Preach!" Klaus hollered, snatching Y/N's lemonade out of her hand.
"Hey! I was drinking that!"
"Well, not anymore," Klaus retorted, chewing on the straw.
Five stared, amused by the interaction before he sat up, suddenly remembering something as he opened the glovebox and pulled out a map. "So, I've circled all the roadside attractions along the way."
Klaus suddenly stiffened, looking over Five's shoulder in tension. "I'm not sure we're gonna have the time for all that..."
"We have the Brownsville Big Nickel. Oh, Ricky's Bakery has award-winning pies."
Y/N perked up, eyes drifting away from the road as she too peered at the marked map. "Oh really?"
"There's that, or there's this Cow Henge."
"If you just let me explain-" Klaus tried, unable to talk over Five's rant and Y/N's inspections. Again, his words fell over deaf ears.
"Which one's closer? The Ghost Town or the Ice Cream Factory," Y/N questioned, her attention completely diverted as she kept one hand on the wheel and the other pointing at the marked attractions.
"About the same dist-"
"Just shut up for two seconds okay!" Klaus exclaimed, silencing the teens as they glowered back at him curiously.
Five huffed, the smile erasing from his face as he folded the map, and Y/N discreetly pulled over, turning of the engine. Slowly, they both turned around to face Klaus in the back seat, looking like an angry couple scolding their child.
"Okay, I'm all ears," Five said, pursing his lips.
"We are going to Pennsylvania to find...my birth mother. Yay!"
"Excuse me?" Y/n inquired, narrowing her eyes.
"I'm sorry, okay? I'm sorry. I just needed a few people to come with me for emotional support."
Y/N sighed, turning around and rotating the key as she continued down the empty road, the sun shining relentless into her eyes. Nonchalantly, she pulled down the visor, placing a pair of sunglasses over her face as Five replied.
"Oh, emotional support, like a Schnauzer?"
"Yeah! Yeah, I knew you two wouldn't come if I told you, so what was I supposed to do," Klaus drawled, shrugging.
