Time travel was chaotic, turbulent, perilous, and fucking unpredictable. One jump could be equivalent to a double-edged sword, with the potential of altering the course of history on one end, and getting stuck as an underdeveloped acorn in a sheet of ice on the other end. Oh, not to mention, getting macaroon-ed in time to the point where you're stuck a year before the end of WWII. That's right.
Y/N sat hunched over on top of a long, black bench, a crumbled newspaper clutched in her searing hot hand. The flimsy sheets of the newspaper began to char, and eventually went up in flames as Y/N's aggravation and unease heightened to a point where she couldn't control her own emotions. Slowly, the headline of the newspaper disappeared, and all that was left was the date as the girl threw the paper to the ground: JUNE 10TH, 1944
Y/N Hargreeves was catapulted 75 years in the past, four days after the events of D-Day, a year before the end of the second world war, and almost a century before the apocalypse in 2019. She was, of course, heavily relieved she was able to escape the fiery engulfs of the end of the world but now, she was alone in a foreign timeline. There were no Five in sight, no Diego, no Klaus, no Vanya or Allison or Luther. She was isolated from the rest of the academy.
Her first instinct was to go straight to where the location of the Umbrella Academy once was, and she was met with an empty green lot with no trace of her old home. A mix of frustration and disorientation had soon enveloped the girl and she found herself mindlessly wandering around the city.
It was somewhat similar, and the aimless walking became a little more guarded and calculated as soon as Y/N felt the curious and bewildered stares she got from other passerbys. She was bloodied, her clothes were frayed, her hair a tangled heap, and her skin was coated with a layer of dust and ashes from the earlier fight. The limp she'd acquired from slamming into the wall wasn't helping her cause either, so the girl decided she might as well find an adequate shelter before planning her next move.
Y/N paused before a television shop named Morty's Television and Radio, frowning as she saw the quick shuffle of a curtain in the alleyway behind the shop. She was being watched.
Luckily for her, she had a bobby pin in the pocket of her blazer and it came in quite handy as she picked the lock of the door and shuffled inside, observing her surroundings. There were multiple empty staircases, the walls painted a dull green while the uneven tiled floors on the landings creaked with each step.
Eventually, she found herself staring at the only two doors on the floor. It seemed to be the office for the television shop downstairs, and the wooden door with the blurred glass window read 'Mortimer Gussman,' likely the person she'd meet if she opened the door.
Y/N lifted her fist and hastily knocked on the door, shifting in anticipation as the blurred shadow of a figure approached the glass door. With a noisy creak, the figure opened it, and Y/N's lips parted in shock as she stared down at the boy who opened the door. He had brown hair, blue eyes, and couldn't have been any more than the age of twelve by the look of him.
"Are you Mortimer?" Y/N asked slowly, tilting her head in puzzlement.
"That's my father," the boy answered, looking up at her shyly. "The shop is downstairs, if you're lost."
"Is he down there?"
"He's right here," a new voice sounded, gravelly and gruff. A tall man came in the doorframe, pushing the younger boy aside as he furrowed his brows in Y/N's direction. This man was Mortimer Gussman. "Are you Edmund's new girl?"
Y/N retracted, confused. "What? Who's Edmund?"
"He usually sends donuts around this time. But you look a little too old to be a girl scout," the man replied, slightly closing the door as his interest diminished. "Well, good day," he shrugged, pulling the door shut.
