No one spoke of what happened two days ago and it was sort of stressing me. My parents continued to plan and pack for KZN and I made sure to stay out of their way. It's the morning of leaving and I am in the kitchen trying to make a hot cup of cocoa since I can't have coffee. Baba walks in and I move out of the way after greeting him.
"Good morning Baba." He grunts and does what he came to do. I walk up to my room and wear my slipper boots, deciding to go back downstairs in thirty minutes. "Hurry up and finish, we leave in twenty minutes." I grab my small bag and rush downstairs, tripping in the process. "Careful. You can't fall now, it's dangerous for both you and the baby." Bhut Sandile holds me by my waist and helps me own the stairs.
"Sawubona ntombi." Mam'Maria greets me, walking past me to get to the dining room. "yebo ma." I follow behind her and got to where everyone was. I sat down in my seat and grabbed some garlic buns and yogurt. I stood up to grab a plastic bag to throw the buns in. Everyone scurried to pack the bags in the car. "Come now, it's time for us to leave." I nodded and washed the utensils I had used. "Bhuti can I sit next to you?" I ask Simphiwe. He, among my parents, stopped speaking to me a few months ago...actually, after his whole incident at night. I tried talking to him about it but he wouldn't give me the time or day.
I had to entrap him somehow to get him to speak to me and this is the only thing I could think of. "Actually Yandisokuhle, I'm going to be flying in a few days." My mouth formed an 'o' as I nodded. "I hear you bhuti." I got in the car, making sure to sit in the far back, baba was going to be the one to drive the mini van. "Are we all set?" My brothers answer and I hum quietly. The car hums to life.
I immediately close my eyes as we drive off. I spend most of my time listening to music on my phone. We make the first stop just as we are about to leave Gauteng at the Engine garage. "You all know the drill. I want you back in the car in thirty minutes." Baba speaks as he parks the car. "Yebo Baba." One by one, my brothers leave the car and I am the last one to leave. I pull my hoodie further down and hold on to my wallet.
'Just walk in, buy a pie and hot cocoa and leave. Pie, hot cocoa, leave,' I chant to myself as I walk further and further towards the doors. As I step in, I feel the eyes on me. With my head held high, I walk to the section where they sell the pies. "Sanibona. May I please have a steak and kidney pie and a cream of mushroom pie."
"Coming right up." I nod, "Thank you." I move to the coffee machine and make my drink. As soon as I had my pies and drink, I made a bee line to the cashier to pay. "Hey, aren't you that girl who got pregnant for a family friend?" I nod my head. "May I please just pay and leave." She gives me a smile and gives me my slip. I walk out and get back in the car.
"Are we all in? Okay, let's get going." We get back on the road and I somehow fall back to sleep. When I wake up, I find that we are almost home and my anxiety sky rockets. The sun has already set and it was fast approaching dark. I shut my eyes and just listen to the sound of the wheels on the rocky road. "We are here." The car comes to a halt and the lights come on. "Gogo!" The twins squeal and rush out to greet our grandmother, Baba's mom.
Like before, I'm the last one to leave the car and I hear everyone gasp. The urge to roll my eyes is strong but I choose to smile. "Hi Gogo." She comes to give me a hug. "I am truly disappointed in you." She let's go of me and walks off to the main house. I'm left standing there in the cold. "Move something Yandisokuhle, don't just stand there like a pregnant princess. Lana kuyasechenzwa. (Here we work.)" I am pushed out of the way and that brings me out of my head.
I grab my suitcase and begin dragging it against the dirt to my parent's house. "Hawu, kanti umithi impela. Mina ngithi kuyadlalwa. (Oh wow. You really are pregnant, I thought it's a joke.)" I roll my eyes. "Haai, let me leave, I have to prepare for umemulo wami." She walks off laughing. I push the door open and walk in, going straight for my room. "Fuck!" I all but throw myself on my bed.
