A D I T Y AHearing Priyanka's story made my blood boil. How could a man be so heartless as to reject his own daughter, saying she wasn't his? It was unfathomable to me. How could anyone turn their back on a girl like Avni—so pure, innocent, and sweet? The thought alone was enough to make me sick.
If you don't want the responsibility of a child, then keep your dick in your pants. It infuriated me that because of his negligence and cowardice, Priyanka and Avni had to suffer. And now, after all this time, he had the audacity to come back, asking for custody? Where was this so-called father when Avni needed him most?
Priyanka had struggled so much, raising Avni on her own, enduring the stigma and the hardships. She had been both mother and father to her, providing for her, protecting her. The pain and sacrifice she had gone through were immeasurable. And now, this man wanted to waltz back into their lives as if he had any right? The thought made my blood simmer.
I made a mental note: after dealing with the bastards involved with my father, I'd make sure to handle him too. There was no way I'd let him disrupt their lives again.
Lost in my thoughts, I was pulled back to the present by Priyanka's sudden embrace. She hugged me tightly, seeking comfort. I realized that, aside from Avni, I was the only one she had left. After her husband passed away, there was no one else for her. She treated me like a little brother, and I took that responsibility seriously. I would do anything to support and protect her.
"Thank you," she whispered, her voice trembling. "I don't know what I would do without you."
I hugged her back, holding her close. "You don't have to worry about that. I'm here for you, always," I reassured her, my voice firm with conviction.
In that moment, I vowed to protect Priyanka and Avni with everything I had. No one would harm them while I was around. I would make sure of that.
I patted Priyanka's head, saying softly, "Don't worry, everything will be fine. Just relax." Seeing her cry made my heart ache. She was always so strong; I had never seen her break down like this before. But the fear of someone taking Avni away from her was overwhelming.
I continued to pat her head, trying to reassure her that everything would be okay. Suddenly, the door opened. Anger flared up inside me—who dared to enter without knocking? But my anger turned into shock when I saw Aakriti standing there.
What was she doing here from the finance department? The worry etched on her face and the anger in her eyes told me something was seriously wrong. Her gaze shifted from me to Priyanka, and only then did I realize the compromising position we were in, still hugging.
I quickly pulled back, my mind racing. "Aaki, this isn’t what it looks like," I started, but the words felt hollow even to me. The look on her face said it all—she had drawn her own conclusions.
Shit, shit, shit.
Does she think something else about this situation? Is she assuming Priyanka and I are a couple? How could this be possible? Priyanka moved back and wiped her tears as soon as she saw Aakriti.
“Aadi,” Aakriti said in a small voice, a lone tear falling from her eye.
“Aakriti, it's not what you think,” I said, trying to make her understand.
