A K R I T I

The soft rays of morning sunlight streamed through the curtains, but I was far too comfortable in bed to notice. It wasn’t until my phone rang, startling me awake, that I realized the time. I groaned, squinting at the screen. **9:00 AM.**

“Oh, no! I’m late!” I exclaimed, grabbing the phone in panic. The name flashing on the screen read *Adi*. Great, he was probably already on his way.

“Hello, sorry! I just woke up,” I blurted out before he could say a word.

“I knew it. That’s why I called,” Aditya said, his tone both amused and teasing. “Now get ready. I’ll be there in 30 minutes to pick you up. No excuses. Bye!”

He hung up before I could respond, and I jumped out of bed, racing to the bathroom.

Twenty minutes later, I was ready—dressed in a light kurti and jeans, my hair tied up in a messy ponytail. I wolfed down my breakfast as quickly as I could when the doorbell rang.

“Namaste, Aunty,” I heard Aditya greet my mom warmly as I carried my plate to the kitchen.

From the sounds of it, he was charming her again. I peeked out to see them engrossed in conversation, laughing like old friends. My mom’s face lit up whenever he visited, and I couldn’t blame her. Aditya had that effect on people.

“Are you two planning to chat all morning?” I teased, finally joining them.

Aditya turned to look at me, his expression softening. “Ready?”

I nodded, grabbing my purse. My mom waved us off with a knowing smile, and we headed to the car.

Forty minutes later, we pulled up in front of the jewelry store Aditya’s mom had recommended. The shop had a luxurious feel, with glittering displays and soft music playing in the background.

“Wow,” I murmured as we stepped inside. “This place looks expensive.”

Aditya smirked. “Only the best for you, Aki.”

I rolled my eyes at his typical flair but couldn’t help the smile tugging at my lips. A salesperson approached us, and after explaining that we were looking for engagement rings, we were ushered to a private section.

“Ladies first,” Aditya said, gesturing for me to look through the display.

I scanned the glittering array of rings, feeling a little overwhelmed by the options. Some were simple yet elegant, while others were extravagant with large stones.

“What do you think of this one?” I held up a ring with a delicate design and a small diamond in the center.

Aditya leaned closer to inspect it, his shoulder brushing against mine. “It’s nice, but… not stunning enough for you.”

I shot him a playful glare. “I’m not looking for stunning. I’m looking for something I can wear every day without it feeling too heavy.”

“Well, I want people to look at your hand and know you’re married to me,” he quipped, grinning.

“Trust me, they’ll know,” I said, trying to hide my blush.

After some back and forth, I finally chose a ring with a minimalist yet elegant design—just perfect. Aditya, on the other hand, picked a sleek platinum band with a subtle engraving of our initials inside.
