A D I T Y A

“Remember when you wanted to talk about something important, and I suddenly had to leave and come back later? That day was a nightmare,” I began, the memory flooding back. My voice grew husky with emotion as I recounted the events, pulling her even closer, feeling the warmth of her body against mine.

“I know,” she whispered softly, her voice barely audible. We were so close that she was resting in my arms, her hand rubbing my chest, providing a soothing comfort that eased my pain.

“My dad owns a mafia business. He has been in this line of work for many years,” I revealed, the weight of the secret pressing down on me.

“What? Mafia?” she exclaimed, her eyes widening in astonishment as she pulled back slightly to look at me.

“Yes,” I confirmed, nodding gravely. “He retired a few years ago and wanted me to take over his business when I was eighteen. But I don’t want that life. The sight of blood terrifies me. I refused him every time. But then he found out about us. He knew how much I liked you, how you became my weakness. So he played a dirty game. He forced me to take over the mafia, and I couldn’t refuse because he threatened you. He held you at gunpoint. If I denied him, he might have taken your life…”

I couldn’t finish my sentence because she cut me off by kissing me on the lips. I was taken aback but responded within seconds, pouring all my pent-up emotions into the kiss.

“So, that’s why you broke up with me. Because you didn’t want him to hurt me,” she said, pulling away slightly, her eyes filled with understanding and sorrow.

“Yes,” I admitted, my voice breaking. “I thought if I distanced myself from you, he would leave you alone. But it tore me apart every single day.”

“Why didn't you share it with me? Hum dono milke kuch soch lete. Yu dur hona zaruri tha kya?” she asked, a lone tear rolling down her cheek. I reached out and wiped it away before it fell.

“I didn't have that much time. He kept an eye on you constantly. One wrong move, and he could have taken you away from me forever. My dad even said that I had to break your heart by claiming I loved someone else. It was a terrible lie. I never thought about any other girl except you,” I confessed, my voice thick with regret.

She looked at me with a mix of sadness and determination. “Tumhe mujh par bharosa karna chahiye tha. Hum saath milkar is musibat ka samna kar sakte the,” she said, her voice cracking with emotion.

“I know, and I'm so sorry,” I replied, my voice trembling. “I was just so scared of losing you. I thought pushing you away was the only way to keep you safe. Every day without you felt like a knife twisting in my heart.”

“But why lie about loving someone else?” she asked, her eyes filled with hurt and confusion. “I didn't understand why you didn't just ask for a break. We could have talked later, and you could have explained everything to me.”

“It wasn’t that simple,” I explained, the weight of my actions pressing down on me. “He made it clear that if I talked to you again, it would be your last day. He was always watching, always one step ahead. I couldn’t keep you hanging, waiting for me indefinitely. I wanted you to be happy, to find someone who could love you and protect you better than I ever could. So, I lied, hoping you would move on.”

“But I never moved on,” she said, tears brimming in her eyes. “I knew something was off. I kept waiting for you, day after day, month after month, year after year. I kept hoping that one day you would contact me again. I was admitted to the hospital the day after you left me. I was so mentally unwell that no one knew what was going on in my brain. Then Mona came, and I told her everything. She saw me in pain, saw the sleepless nights where I cried the whole night. That’s why she hates you so much.”
