I was abruptly shaken awake.
"Get up Jamie! Get up! It's snowing!." Ziggy shook me by my shoulders.
"Fuck Zig what?" The weight from last night still stuck with me. Her shaking felt like I was playing baseball but the bat swung me instead of the other way around.
"It's a snow day Jamie, we need to start on the snowman now." She nearly yelled at me.
"I'll be down in a minute, Zig." I scratched my eyes to get a better look at her.
She was wearing baggy jeans that had a bunch of random patches sewn into them. She wore brown ankle boots that matched her big clunky brown jacket. She wore a white graphic tee under it but I couldn't make out what it said that well because the knit scarf that she got from Mrs.Weasley was covering it. She had green earmuffs in the shape of flowers to keep her hair down too, it didn't look brushed.
"I'll be right outside JJ, get ready now!" She pranced out of my room.
I was exhausted, but to miss a snow day would be the biggest red flag to my family. I wasn't in the mood for conversation. I pushed myself off my bed and to the closet. I grabbed blue jeans and a giant clunky sweater. I paired it with black shoes and of course dad's jacket. Might as well match Zig with the Weasley scarf too.
I mushed myself downstairs, feeling weighed and trudging along. Harry was scarfing down some cereal.
"Zig shook you awake too?"
"Does it look like I'm up by choice?"
"She has an attitude this morning."
"I'm sorry, I couldn't sleep."
"You'd think sleeping in until 12 in the afternoon would even out the late night." He munched on another bite.
"Now who has the attitude?" I scoffed a little.
"Go mess with some snow outside loser." He said, mouth partially full.
"I'm not the only one who's going out Har." I said, walking out.
The sun scorched my eyes as if it was directed towards my line of sight. Ziggy was ordering Fred and George around like a drill sergeant.
"Fred! You're supposed to make the middle ball smaller than the big one! "
"It's for my snowman Belle!"
"Uh- now is not the time Fred.. George! Make a smaller one for the snowman's body!"
Ziggy was smaller than the twins, they stand at about six foot one, so it was funny to see them get ordered around by Ziggy. They did it willingly, just because they knew she'd be nicer the rest of the day if they worked now.
Fred noticed me, "CAS! Come help." He motioned for me to come over.
"Jamieeeee, did you eat anything yet?" Ziggy asked, almost bouncing on me.
"How are you so hyper right now?" I tried to nudge her away.
"I love the winter JJ." She said, falling flat on her back into a layer of snow and making an angel out of it.
She bounced back up, "You boys take too long."
She instantly shooed them away, finishing the snowman herself. She took off her scarf and added it around its neck. She had some rocks and sticks huddled to the side so she didn't have to scavenge for them.
"TA DAAAA!" She raised both arms to introduce her creation properly.
We clapped for her rapidly, making sure she really knew we wanted to get this over with.
"Thank you, thank you." She bowed gracefully.
George ran to her. He picked her up, throwing her into the snow as they wrestled in the ground.
"You tired?" Fred asked me.
"A bit yeah."
"Well I hope not too tired, we're going out tonight."
"Where out?"
"Harry knows this karaoke club close by, he said it'd be fun so we decided why not."
I was a bit annoyed no one consulted me but it really wasn't that serious I guess. "Why didn't you guys ask me?"
"You've been down ever since we left. We just wanted to hang out with you in a blow off place. Forget about him for a second you know?"
In the moment I had forgotten about him. The fact that no one even wants to say his name kinda makes me wanna think about him more. I find it interesting how someone can become such a taboo topic of conversation. He angers me but he interests me to my core. He's so strange and I'm obsessed with it.
"You can say his name Freddie."
"Well, forget about Mattheo then."
"He sent me a letter last night?"
He tensed up, "Yeah?"
"He didn't say much. Pretty much just I told you so"
"Isn't he the sweetest." He rolled his eyes.
"He's said worse. And he's said better." I rubbed my arms. I felt cold not just from the weather but the mood of the conversation.
There was silence for a moment, Zig and George's laughs still in the background.
"So... karaoke?"
"Yeah."
"I'm not much of a singer." I laugh quietly.
"Oh bullshit Cas!" He shoves my arm.
"What do you mean bullshit Freddie?" I shove him back.
"You're a wonderful singer. I hear you singing to yourself under your breath all the time."
I was a little embarrassed. "You'd notice that?"
"You're not very discrete."
Harry finally walks out, "Damn did I miss the snowman already?"
He ran deeper into the snow, rolling a ball into his hands and punting it at Ziggy and George.
"HARRY!" Ziggy laughed out, scrambling to get snow.
"We better join in then before we get pelted-" As if on cue, a snowball hit Fred right in the jaw.
I covered my mouth trying not to laugh.
"Don't be a bore guys come on!" George yelled, throwing another ball at me.
We shared a big smile, as if the end of his smile was the start of mine. We grabbed snowballs and plummeted them into the other three. We were pretty quick if I allowed myself to brag for a second. I liked being a kid again, even for just a moment.
