CHAPTER FORTY-SEVEN: A LOSING BATTLE

_______

"Mizu, Van Ruyven is around—"

"I know. My watch is always on him."

She was so composed, as if she knew just the perfect route not to evade him, in this bustling city center. As if, the consequence of being spotted did not scare her one bit...

"This way." she turned.

Mizu led the way through the city as the little redheaded orphan held onto her leg. The top of his vibrant curls barely reached her belt.

Sogo glanced at Mizu's emotionally detached expression. Her retrieved bunny was tucked in her blouse, taking a nap after its lovely game of chase.

How is she not concerned..?

She just always knows what to do...

Meanwhile... I panic under pressure.

They were back on the ship, predictably, and with ease. The boy waited for the vegetable stew Mizu prepared in the canteen. He played with Sogo's rabbit, repeating fantastical stories told to him, something about a giant and an evil soldier.

Mizu cut the root vegetables seamlessly with a kitchen knife. She used the knuckles to guide the knife down its stem, turning the rigid root into easy slices. Her glasses were off, and a wavy lock of hair framed her face. She looked so regal and focused, even with something like cooking...

Feeling Sogo's eyes, Mizu raised hers. "Something on your mind?"

Sogo's stare fell on the kitchen knife. Skilled again, even with something so measly like cooking. She was as stealthy as a shadow and precise with the blade. Just how far did Mizu's skills go..?

It reminded her of the unfortunate story with her husband... how she fought multiple imperial soldiers at once... but how could one person do that? One woman?

She briefly got a glimpse of her skills during her match with Bokeh. But it was so fast that she and Mei could only stare in awe.

If she could only see Mizu in action with her bare eyes, fully... to bear witness to something that seemed humanly impossible...

Mizu arched a brow at her silence. Then, she followed her line of sight, reaching the end of her knife. With the way she relaxed her grasp on the kitchen knife, her two long fingers pressed forward.

Oh.

She smirked at her. "Pervert."

Within seconds, Sogo yelled out that wasn't what she was thinking. Her face went beet red and she stormed out of the canteen, throwing her hands in the air that Mizu was the perverted one. With the bunny beside him, the boy's face turned with her as Sogo left the canteen.
