CHAPTER FIFTY-NINE: COULD DEMON'S CRY?

_______

Mizu.. are you looking for me?

Are you alive?

Are you thinking about me, too?

I miss you...

Hidden in a dense, untamed part of the wilderness was a crystal pond, and Mizu, its sole witness.

She was hunched over, sobbing and tears coming down her face. She'd suffer far worse than either could've anticipated. The pain of Mikio and her mother seemed dull compared to this stinging fate. She couldn't hold it in anymore as she wept. One hand was firmly around her open mouth, trying to muffle her whimpers. The hot tears collected over her palm and drenched down her chin. They were endless and fell into the pond.

I couldn't tell you I love you.

Could demons cry? She felt sick, sobbing so violently. The nausea threatened she could throw up, but there was no food in her body. She wanted to crumble and dissolve into the pond. Lay in the forest and let the moss, dirt, and soil wrap over her. Let the bugs feast on her, she didn't want this wretched existence and all its pain anymore.

Whenever she closed her eyes, she saw her. When they were open, she saw her image her periphery. She turned at first, even the mirage of her lover was enough for her desperate heart. Then, she vanished.

"I miss you," she cried. Her voice snapped in half, heavy and drunk from crying. "I miss you, so much... Sogo... I'm sorry..."

She felt haunted, and she'd let the ghost of her lover follow her all her life because it made her feel close to her. She'd let the ghost give her nightmares, punishing her for failing her. You said you'd protect me. You let me die. Mizu would reply, with overwhelming love, So punish me in this life and the next.

Please... Stay by my side and don't leave me. Make me suffer for all eternity, as long as you're there.

The thought of ending her life came back. Since waking up from her coma, that voice that told her she couldn't die was quiet. The voice of survival, of revenge, of steering her into her life's purpose. Where was it, now?

"Sogo..." she whimpered her name. Her lashes were completely wet, and the teardrops wet her creamy kimono. "I want to see you, Sogo..."

She stared at her shaking reflection in the pond. Her eyes were puffy and swollen for crying. Her hair was down to her midback as she took in her appearance. The last time she dressed so feminine was in her marriage. The heartbreaking event that triggered this all. She thought she'd experienced all the pain life had to give... how could there be more..?
