CHAPTER FIFTY-TWO: HER DEARIE

______

The scorching ache of the bullets lodged in her body was unbearable. But with each limp step, she grew more and more numb, and the pain became a part of her. Sustenance for her wrath.

She reached the sunlight. Standing in the doorway of the ship's interior. Her arms were wide as she slouched over, like a demon that withered from out the abyss.

Van Ruyven stood on the deck in his glistening armor. The sun transformed his long, blonde hair into an extension of itself. His eyes were as chilly and blue as Mizu's with the same goal in mind: the demise of the person in front of them.

He tilted his head, seeing her bandage on her thigh and arm. "Hurt?"

Van Ruyven stared Mizu down. They were like two unstoppable forces. He knew the governor, Father Baltus, was watching him somewhere. He was already in hot water with him, losing those vital keys to the castle (perhaps forever). There was no room for more mistakes.

"I knew you'd kill them. From what I've heard, you're quite good."

She hissed, "One of them is still alive. Ran with his life like a coward. I see he takes after his commander."

Chuckling, he looked down at the sword in Mizu's hand. "A sword..? Against my gun? How primitive."

"Killed your boys just fine."

"Where's Yue?"

"See, that name doesn't ring a bell."

"Enough," he hissed. "Turn yourself in, and I won't have to kill you or her."

Mizu caught the shadow of something above them on the foremast. There was another soldier, pointing his loaded musket down at Mizu. Perfect shot.

"Like I said..." she growled. "A coward."

The young soldier who ran with his life found himself deeper into the ship. He ran insanely, desperate to get away from Mizu. He didn't want to be a soldier, but he felt so persuaded into it. He wasn't built for the bloodshed. As he ran down aimlessly, he heard screaming. Past a heavy door, at the deepest point of the ship, he faced a beast of a man. Locked inside the briggs.

He stared wide-eyed at Fowler. The bars were between them, and at his size, he promised that they were more than necessary. He was someone who could kill you with his bare hands. A monster locked away.

It reeked of opium. The soldier had to cover his mouth at the stench. Opium was banned on the island, under Dutch rule. Though his superiors always followed their own rules, it made him incredibly sick. He tried not to vomit.
