Chapter 1

Aric POV

I could hear the wind rustling through the trees as Aiden and I ran through the forest, our feet pounding against the ground in perfect sync. We didn't need words to communicate; we never had. It was as if we shared a single mind, always knowing what the other was thinking and feeling.

The scent of pine and earth filled my nostrils, a comforting reminder of home. The Dark Moon pack's territory was vast, and we knew every inch of it by heart. This was our playground, our training ground, and soon, it would be our battlefield.

"You're getting slow," Aiden taunted, a wicked grin spreading across his face as he pushed ahead of me.

"Dream on," I shot back, matching his pace with ease. The rivalry between us was always there, simmering beneath the surface. We might be inseparable, but deep down, we both knew what was at stake. Only one of us could inherit the Alpha title, and neither of us was willing to back down.

As we reached the clearing, we skidded to a halt, breathing heavily. The full moon cast a silvery glow over the landscape, making the shadows dance and flicker. It was nights like these that made me feel truly alive, the power of the wolf coursing through my veins.

"Dad's been pushing us harder lately," Aiden said, his voice low. "Do you think he knows?"

"Knows what?" I asked, though I already had a good idea.

"That we're competing," Aiden replied, his eyes narrowing. "He has to. It's not just about strength or skill anymore. It's about proving we're worthy."

I nodded, my mind racing. Alaric was a formidable Alpha, and he expected nothing less than perfection from his heirs. Our father had built this pack into something powerful, something feared. It was a legacy that we both wanted to continue, but only one of us could.

"We'll just have to see who wants it more," I said, determination hardening my voice.

Aiden smirked. "May the best man win, brother."

As we stood there, side by side, I felt a surge of pride and rivalry. We were the future of the Dark Moon pack, and nothing would stand in our way. The competition was real, and it was fierce, but it was also what drove us to be better, stronger, and more ruthless than anyone else.

Mom's voice cut through the night like a blade, resonating through the trees with a power that demanded immediate attention. Her urgency was unmistakable, even without the force of her command.

"Aric! Aiden! Get back here now!" Her voice echoed, filled with authority and a tinge of worry.

I could feel the hair on the back of my neck stand up. When Luna Olivia called, you didn't dawdle.

"Race you back," I said, throwing a challenging glance at Aiden.

He grinned, his eyes glinting with the same competitive fire that burned in mine. "You're on."

We took off, feet pounding against the earth, pushing each other to go faster. The forest blurred around us as we darted through the familiar paths, each twist and turn a test of our speed and agility. The urgency in Mom's voice fueled our race, adding an edge to our rivalry.

Aiden pulled ahead for a moment, but I surged forward, determined not to let him win. The trees whipped past us, and I could hear his breath, steady and strong, matching my own.

As we neared the edge of the forest, the lights of our home came into view, warm and inviting. Mom stood there, her silhouette outlined by the glow, arms crossed, her expression a mix of relief and sternness.
