Chapter 51 - Demons of the past

"Has your fever broken?" asks Atlas as he nuzzles into his mate from behind. They are lying in bed, in the secluded hunting cabin, which they have been staying in for the last week during Rose's heat. Licking her neck, where he has freshly bitten her, it is healing nicely. He couldn't help himself to mark her again, during their frenzied mating. Rose shivers at the feel of her mate licking his mark "yes I think you've finally broken my fever" replies Rose. This is only the second heat she has had since the birth of Xavier, who is now two years old. Heats vary for different she-wolves, some get them every six months, and some can go for years without having a heat. Now they'll have to wait and see if she's pregnant. Her last heat was unsuccessful, goddess willing, this time it worked. Atlas has always lamented that he doesn't care if they can't have more pups, Xavier is enough, but Rose knows that deep down he desperately wants another pup. It's in their nature, as wolves, to want to sire pups. Rose herself, would love to give Xavier a sibling to play with, sadly there aren't any other pups around for him to be with.

"Mama, papa, you're back!" yells Xavier as he runs at them. Atlas crouches low and grabs his son, tossing him high up in the air, much to the delight of Xavier who squeals and giggles. He is much larger than a normal two-year-old and is more advanced mentally and physically. He can move and talk more like a four- to five-year-old. Atlas can still toss him in the air with ease, but Rose can no longer do it, it's too much of a physical strain for her. Jin emerges from Uncle Bob's cabin, where he now lives with Bob alone. Jin now has the loft bedroom, that was Rose & Atlas's room. Atlas and Rose now have their own cottage, situated a little further along the lake. There are several more cabins dotted around the territory, housing the newer pack members. Pine Lake Pack, although still small, had grown over the last two years to include more members. They now boasted twenty members, and there was even one pregnant couple. This gave Rose hope that soon, one way or another, Xavier would have another child to play with.

Pine Lake were still yet to build a pack house, as they lacked the funds. However, they did have a central kitchen, laundry, communal dining hall, and shower & restroom facilities, like what you would find in a commercial campground. Not all the cabins have been fitted out with plumbing yet, and building central facilities meant they could quickly accommodate more pack members without the huge infrastructure expense required to build fully equipped housing. Pine Lake Pack is becoming known as a humbler pack, living carefully in a self-sustaining manner, quite the opposite to many of the larger packs

Jin pats Atlas on the back and gives Rose a hug. "How did it go?" he whispers in Rose's ear.

"My fever broke this morning, so we'll have to wait and see" replies Rose. Jin nods in understanding, if her heat had ended sooner, it would be a good sign of conception. But a heat naturally ends after a week, so it's not certain if it's due to conception or it just naturally ran its course. Rose tries not to think of how easily she became pregnant with Xavier, her heat ending in only 24 hours, which she now knows is unprecedented in shifter history. Even 72 hours is considered an amazing achievement.

"Atlas, Alpha Knight of Mystic Falls called while you were gone, he is requesting a formal visit to our pack. I believe he wants to talk to you about training his elite soldiers in field operations. It looks like your reputation in special operatives has preceded you. He's suggesting stationing a team of operatives here, to be trained personally by you. It could be quite a lucrative contract for us, as Alpha Knight has the resources to offer us very generous payment terms. He doesn't want to take any chances if the CBC decide to attack and wants his team to be trained only by the best, which in this case is you" informs Jin.

On hearing mention of Alpha Knight, Rose freezes, suddenly stumbling, and almost falls to the ground. Jin catches her arm to steady her "Rose are you okay? You look very ill all of a sudden...you've gone pale?" Jin says with concern "you must still be a little woozy from your heat, you should really go lie down and rest".

"Is mama ok?" asks Xavier, and he runs to his mother and holds her hand "come mama, I take you home for nap time" the strong little boy says and he begins to tug her towards their cottage. Rose stares at her beautiful little boy, a miniature Caden, and is stricken at the thought of her mate coming to visit. He will take one look at Xavier and know instantly that she deceived him. Rose knows to deceive an Alpha in such a manner is tantamount to treason, and treason is punishable by death. Would Alpha Knight have her killed and take Xavier?

"Mama shaking!  Don't be scared Mama, I will protect you!" says Xavier with a defiant look in his eyes. That looks scares Rose, it reminds her so much of Caden. Xavier is a blue blood through and through, and every day he looks more a more like his biological father. She knew the day would come that she would need to confront the demons of her past, but she naively thought she still had more time.

Glancing towards her chosen mate, she can see Atlas staring at her intensely. He can sense something is wrong. She knows Atlas loves her and Xavier more than anything in the world, and he will surely fight to death for them. And it would be to the death too, because as strong and amazing as Atlas was, Rose knew he was no match for a blue blood Alpha, not one the strength of Caden. Staring at Atlas, she hates the idea of deceiving him, but she has to keep her family safe somehow. She had to think of a way to avoid Caden's visit.

There was only one person who she knew could help with this situation. It was time for her to ring her Aunt Sophie. Sophie would help her think of a solution.
