Chapter 64 - Hide and Seek

"More pancakes?" asks Sophie, as she places another pancake on Xavier's plate. She has brought him to the Redwood dining hall for breakfast. Xavier woke up at the crack of dawn full of energy, while his exhausted mother was still sleeping. Sophie wanted to let her niece sleep in, so she brought her grandnephew to the pack dining hall for breakfast. It's still too early for the main breakfast service to start, however the kitchen staff kindly made Xavier a special batch of pancakes and bacon just for him, like the rest of the pack they are besotted with the adorable pup. Xavier is tucking into his breakfast, with his cute stuff toy wolf pup, on his lap. He is pretending to give little bites of food to his toy, before eating it himself.

"What would you like to do after breakfast? Did you know this pack boasts a magical forest of very old Redwood trees, would you like to see them?" Sophie asks, as she runs her hands through the boy's hair, affectionately tousling it.

"Yes Luna Sophie, I love the Redwood Forest! Unca Knock and I play hide and seek there, can we play that?"

Clutching Xavier's hand, while the boy grips his toy with the other hand, Sophie gasps in awe as they enter the grand Redwood Forest. She can see why this special place is the namesake of this pack. She had heard how beautiful it was, but seeing it for the first time, she is blown away by how truly magnificent it is. She gazes up at the towering Redwood trees. Standing tall, strong and proud, they exude strength, just like their custodian, Alpha Knox. How fitting it is, that he is the one who presides over this forest. She has a brief thought, of how she could be very happy living here.

"You shift, and I hide" exclaims Xavier "and when you find me, I get to ride your wolf's back all the way home!"

"Oh...is that the game? Okay you go run then and I'll shift. I'll count to 100, then I'll howl when I'm coming" says Sophie, as her nephew bolts off. He is fast for his age; Sophie knows it must be his blue blood genes. She can only imagine how big he will be one day. Turning to her bodyguard, she whispers "Trevor follow him, but don't let him see you". Trevor nods and begins to trail after the pup.

Sophie undresses and shifts into her beautiful silvery grey wolf. Ever since Knox helped her regain her wolf at Mystic falls, she has been shifting daily and can do it easily now. After counting to 100, she tilts back her head and gives a playful "Awooo", alerting the pup she is coming for him. Her wolf is excited to play, she never got the chance to play games with her own pup, with tail wagging she bounds off into the woods in search of her nephew.

Snout to the ground, she picks up the scent of Xavier, she begins to follow his trail, she suddenly feels a stinging on her paw. Looking down at her paw she sees a dart sticking out of it, she instantly tries to shift to pull it out, but she finds she can't shift from her fur form. She focuses again to bring back her skin form, while she is concentrating, she suddenly feels a collar go around her and then a muzzle, she is dragged back muzzled and collared by a thick chain. She turns to see Trevor wrapping the chain around the trunk of a large Redwood tree. She snarls and thrashes, what is Trevor doing? She tries to howl for help, but the muzzle has muted her.

"Forgive me Luna, I have no choice. My entire family's lives are on the line. If I don't follow Beta Mark's instructions, he will kill them all. Don't worry, I'll take care of Xavier" says Trevor, as he locks the chain securely, and then rushes off into the woods, tracking Xavier's scent.

Coming to a clearing, he spots Xavier stalking a lizard. The pup has forgotten about the hide and seek game they were playing, being distracted by the lizard he's found.

"Xavier, come quickly, Luna Sophie has a surprise for you. She asked me to come and get you" says Trevor holding out his hand to the pup "but we have to move quickly and quietly, and then we will win the special prize". Xavier squeals with excitement and rushes to take Trevor's hand, while holding his toy wolf in the other. Trevor hoists Xavier onto his shoulders, and quickly moves through the dense forest. He has to get to the rendezvous point quickly, before the alert is sounded.
