By the end of the night, Gabi's chair had moved next to Lando's and they were a little more than tipsy, their ankles hooked around eachother as he leaned close to her and laughed into her neck.
The date was perfect, as perfect as a date could get. Good food, good drink, a handsome man and a beautiful dress--Gabi was in heaven. She never wanted it to end.
"You never told me why you moved out of Poland." Lando said, lifting his wine-glass and bringing it to his lips.
Gabi chuckled. "It's a very long story. Kind of a mood-killer, if you know what I mean."
Lando seemed to understand. "If you don't want to talk about it then we wont." He squeezed her hand lightly.
Gabi felt a familiar knot form in her stomach. Her childhood was always something she left untouched--it shouldn't matter where she came from or who she used to be, all that mattered was what she was now, right?
She sighed. "My parents were alcoholics. Well, everyone in Poland is. But they were...neglectful. And cruel. They would come home late, forget I was there. There was hardly any food in the country at the time, but they kept most of what we had to themselves. " Gabi kept her eyes on the plate in front of her. "I was dirt poor. I couldn't afford shoes, or clothes, or nice things. My parents liked to remind me that that wouldn't change."
"So I left." Gabi shrugged. "When I was twelve. I hitched a ride with some guy and came to the states. And I haven't looked back."
Lando nodded as she spoke.
She grinned sadly. "Like I said, mood-killer."
"It's not a moodkiller." Lando said quietly. "It's...amazing. That you had the courage to do that, and that you've made it so far from those people. It's admirable."
Gabi's melancoly grin turned genuine as she locked eyes with him, planting a kiss on his cheek. "I don't deserve you, Norris."
"I'm the one that doesn't deserve you." He gave her a cheeky smile. "Being with you--around you the past few weeks has been nothing short of perfect. I've never... been like this with anyone, I think."
The silk of her dress sent a chill up Gabi's spine. "It has been perfect. Is it selfish to hope it doesn't end?"
Her hand was in his again, this time brought up to his lips as he lightly pecked her knuckles. "No, angel, it's not."
The two sat there for a few moments longer, smiling and staring at eachother in a gaze that could only feel to Gabi like...love. Maybe, she wasn't sure. But as the night grew darker and the busy street outside grew louder, she realized maybe it was time for this date to end.
"Wanna head out of here?" Lando seemed to read her mind.
"Yes, please. " She giggled, standing up from her seat and grabbing her handbag. "As amazing as this dress is, I think it might be time for me to get out of it."
Lando stood with her. "That, my dear, is exactly what I like to hear. Come on."
They made their was to the door when suddenly, a small flash from the corner of the room sent Gabi's head on a swivel.
It was so fast, so small, that any normal person might've missed it, but Gabi had gotten quite good at noticing the things that other people didnt.
"Lando..." Gabi mumbled dazily. She stopped in her tracks as her eyes searched for the culprit of the light, eventually finding their way to a girl standing on the top of the stairs, leaning behind one of the pillars with a phone in her eyes and her eyes wide in shock.
Lando furrowed is eyebrows at Gabi, following her gaze to the girl. The moment felt like it took days--the three of them standing and staring at eachother as dread began to fill Gabi's stomach.
Before she could say anything, the girl coughed and slipped back down the stairs hurriedly.
The room was dead silent. Gabi's breath became ragged as she stared at the spot where the girl had been. She'd seen them. Photographed them. Together. If there was any hope at peace and privacy, that had just flown out the window in a matter of minutes.
"Gabi, come on." Lando pulled at her hand, seemingly just as shocked as she was. "We have to get out of here. Now."
She let herself be dragged through doors and down stairs, too shocked and terrified to attempt covering herself.
Lando was speeding down the hallway, phone in hand as he spoke and Gabi didn't know who he was talking to but it didn't matter because now everyone would know and everyone would know and everyone would know.
"Gabi, come on!" Lando's hand snaked around her waist, urging her to move faster as they reached the back doors of the restaurant, ignoring their waitresses calls from behind them.
The back doors swung open and Gabi was not prepared for what laid in front of her.
There must've been twenty of them--photographers, everyday people--all with their phones out as lights began flashing in her face, snapping her in and out of shock. She could hear Lando's ragged breathing next to her as they stood still in front of the crowd. Gabi didn't know what to do until she felt something on her hand.
Lando's hand slipped out of hers and into his pocket. His concerned expression was quickly replaced by a small grin as his free hand lifted above his head to wave to the people in front of them.
Gabi couldn't breathe. He was abandoning her. Denying her. Removing himself entirely from her grasp, that way when these pictures were shown, they looked like mere acquaintances out at dinner. It was perfect for him.
Her throat closed up and she tried desperately to breathe again, to find air in front of her and around her but there was none. And this short moment in front of those people stretched on in her mind as she raced to figure out what to do.
Lando turned to face her and motioned toward the car that pulled up but she could hardly look in his eyes, his beautiful green eyes that she'd once fell asleep staring but now all she could feel was hate and hurt and rage as she looked in those eyes. Gabi didn't know what to do, she didn't know what to say.
Fuck this. He's abandoning you. Abandon him.
She mustered up the strongest face she had, watching as Lando's expression turned sour, and gathered the beautiful silk dress in her hands as she shoved her way through the crowd, the opposite direction of him. She didn't look back and ignoring the people behind her--fans and photographers, all calling her name and asking for a photo--no, she was never looking back at him. The tears pricking at her eyes nearly betrayed her.
Even as she rounded the corner on the block, Gabi could faintly hear Lando calling her name, but she didn't turn around. If she turned around she would walk right back to him and with the tears rolling down her cheeks now, Gabi knew that it was for the better.
She slipped into a small shop, shuffling to the bathrooms and locking herself inside as the noises began to dim outside.
Without any other option, she slipped her phone up to her ear.
It rang a few moments before a click notified her the call had been answered.
"Bridget? Bridget...can you come pick me up? I--everything's fucked up. I...I don't know what to do anymore."
The brunette ended the call saying she would be there in five.
