I had to say that having the dog around was good. Whenever one of us was alone the dog went with us. He was so protective not only of us but of Shawn too. He was sort of like he was meant to be with us on this journey/nightmare.
We were still traveling again stopping for gas and a possible pee break.
"Okay everyone get up. We need to get gas. Anyone getting food or going to the bathroom?" Emily asked as she looked around at everyone who was asleep. Shawn was curled up to the dog as I curled up to Mr. Harrison. I woke up slightly to find the dogs head placed in my lap. I looked at everyone who slowly woke up. We slowly got out of the car as the dog trailed closely beside us. Shawn, Owen and Mr. Harrison went to the men's bathroom. Alayna and I went into the women's bathroom. Emily and Jack along with the dog walked around the gas station enjoying the food they had in store. Alayna and I walked into the bathroom looking around before actually going into the stalls. Just as I opened up the bathroom stall as zombie came running out making me back against the wall. I squirmed out of its reach falling to the ground as Alayna grabbed my hand helping me up. We ran towards the door struggling to get the door to shut.
"Everybody! Let's move! To the car now!" Alayna yelled as everyone ran out the gas station door. I was holding the door shut as everyone got out. The dog began to bark as he moved closer to me. I was still holding the door shut when Mr. Harrison ran back to the opening of the door.
"Come on Brooklyn! Just let the door go!" He said as he motioned me forward.
"Just go! I will catch up! Start the car and slowly start to move! Leave the car door open!" I said as I still struggled to keep the door open. I heard the door I looked at the dog who stared at me as he barked. "Okay boy, let's see how years of track and field pay off." I said mostly to the dog as I counted to 3 in my head before I ran to the door. The dog ran after me following me out to where the car was started and was slowly moving. The dog jumped into the car first as everyone was screaming waiting for me to hop into the car. I ran as fast as I could as the zombie ran after me. The zombie ripped a piece of my shirt as I ran. I reached for the door as I slipped. I jumped this time gripping the door handle. I almost fell out of the car this time but I had Alayna and Owen gripping onto my pulling me in as I shut the door. The car sped up driving away. I was out of the breath.
"Are you stupid? Why would you do that?" Mr. Harrison said looking at me with anger in his eyes. I rolled my eyes at him.
"That was impressive. Never seen someone out run a zombie." Emily said as everyone smiled at me. I leaned back petting the dog as I gave him a slight kiss.
"Track and field really did pay off." I said as I looked over at Owen who just fist bumped me as we both smiled. Owen and I were in track and field for over 7 years, I guess it wasn't a waste of time after all.

"Emily needs rest, who wants to drive?" Jack said as we all noticed Emily was beginning to get tired. I raised my hand just for it to be slapped down by Mr. Harrison. I rubbed my hand staring at him in such shock.
"Brooklyn is not driving. I will drive." Mr. Harrison said as we could all tell he was serious.
"Mr. Harrison you are not driving. You need to take it easy for a little bit." Owen said as Alayna raised her hand.
"Fuck you guys. I'm driving." She said as she climbed into the front seat taking over Emily's spot driving. Mr. Harrison moved into the back seat beside me. He kept his eyes on me the entire time. I ignored his stare as I leaned against the window. I felt his arm snake around me and pull me into his chest.
"Your a stupid kid you know that." He said as I could tell he was serious. I nodded my head not feeling offended.
"I know, but you love me." I said smiling as I turned a bit looking out the window watching as we passed the trees.
"I do love you, but stop doing stupid things that can get yourself killed." He said looking down at me. I turned to face him.
"I only do it to protect everyone else." I said as he brought his hand up to my cheek.
"I know that, but you need to protect yourself and Shawn. Not everyone else in this car." He said as I nodded my head as it was still held in his hands. We leaned in to kiss but just as our lips brushed the dog licked our faces climbing into the seat beside us as he licked Mr. Harrison's face and than turned to lick mine. Alayna, Jack and Owen laughed at the dog and our reactions to him licking us. Emily was passed out as Shawn curled into Mr. Harrison sleeping as well. I laughed slightly as I pet the dog.
"You found a new friend." Jack said as he leaned over the seat to pet King's head. I nodded my head smiling.
"I think we found a new family member to add to our family." I said as I smiled at everyone. Alayna smiled at me through the mirror as she drove. Jack pet King one last time before turning around leaning against the window probably watching the sun go down. Owen leaned back as he leaned on the arm rest he had, placing his head in his hands closing his eyes. The sun began to go down just as I looked over at Mr. Harrison who was getting comfortable between the dog and Shawn. I smiled at him as he caught my stare. He smiled back as he rested his head back shutting his eyes. I looked at Alayna who was concentrated on driving. She began to yawn. "Did you get any sleep last night?" I whispered to her as she jumped a bit startled as I talked. She shook her head.
"I tried but it never really worked." She said as she yawned again. I leaned forward a bit as King shifted making Mr. Harrison shift too.
"Pull the car over and sleep. I can't drive, I haven't slept much either." I said as she nodded her head. She pulled the car over in a kind of pull off on the side of the road. I heard the click of the doors as she locked them. She turned so her head was placed against the window and her feet were up on the seat. She faced me and smiled sleepily.
"You know, I never ever thought in a million years I would be in a car with you and everyone else traveling trying to stay alive." She admitted as I rested my head facing her.
"Yeah you know I always thought of it, but never in my life would I ever think it would happen." I admitted as she went a little wide eyed.
"You actually thought of this?" She asked in complete shock. I nodded my head.
"I mean I thought about it a zombie apocalypse were to happen what I would do to survive but I never thought it would actually happen." I said as she nodded her head leaning back a bit more.
"What you have done so far, were they things you thought they would actually do if a zombie apocalypse happened?" She asked as her tone was quiet and hushed, sleep just covered her face.
I nodded my head.
"I never thought I would be at school when it happened though. But I mean everything I have done, I thought of except I wouldn't have gotten Damian killed." I said becoming emotional again. She noticed siting up as she rested her hand on mine.
"Damian's death wasn't your fault." She said as I could tell she was having a hard time keeping her eyes open. I nodded my head as she laid back down.
"Go to sleep. We will keep traveling tomorrow." I said as she smiled at me.
"Good night." She whispered at me as her eyes shut close.
"Good night."
