"What?" Kunzite grumbled into the receiver. "Can we meet at the bar?" I could clearly hear his impatient sigh. "Yeah, I'll be there soon."
Our regular table was still free. I ordered a Scotch for both of us and buried my head in my hands. What had happened that my life suddenly slipped out of my grasp? It didn't take long before Kunzite joined me.
"You went to see her again, didn't you?" he asked directly as he sat down. "Yes... we negotiated. I seem to mean enough to her that she agreed to some of my demands," I began. "Negotiated? And what demands were those? You didn't tell her to dump the other guy, did you?"
For that remark, he received a reproachful look from me. "Of course not." "As much as I hate to admit it, maybe Kaori is right. If she really means something to you, then you have to fight for her."
"Do you think I haven't thought about that too? But then what? What if she really breaks up with the other guy? Kunz, no matter how I look at it, she doesn't fit into our world. Just think about father's reaction if I stood before him with someone from her class."
Kunzite began to laugh uncontrollably.
"Yeah, thanks a lot. If I decide to fight for her, I need to be sure it will work. That she can find her way in our world, that father won't scare her off... It wouldn't be fair to her if I barged into her life now and then everything falls apart... Besides, there's the other problem in the form of my brother."
"You can never be sure. You can't control feelings. You have no idea how often I wish I could send Kaori to the moon."
I tried to keep my composure, but now I was the one who burst out laughing. "Oh, I can definitely imagine that."
Kunzite couldn't help but smile as well. "But she's still the one who gives me support. Who stands by me in tough decisions and makes my life truly worthwhile... And for someone like that, it's worth fighting for. No one can make that decision for you."
"How did you know she was the one?"
"As if I had a choice. You know Kaori, when she wants something, she can be very persuasive." He grinned broadly at me.
Yes, that was true. I remembered how she used to hover around him. "Hmm... on a different note, any new leads on my wayward brother?"
"No, he's still disappeared without a trace."
Damn it. It wasn't enough that I had to share Usagi with that Seiya now, no, Saphir was probably hiding somewhere, working on a plan to harm me and Usagi.
A few days later.
Usagi lay in my arms. It was already the third time she had stayed overnight, and I watched her sleep. My thoughts were still in turmoil. Should I actually consider making more out of it, or should I end it? I could just continue enjoying the moment and see where it led, but I knew she would have to make a decision eventually. Did I really want to remain just her affair? Would it perhaps spur Saphir even more and put her further in his focus if it became something serious? Could I protect her from him enough?
Her alarm started to ring, and she sleepily blinked up at me. "Oh, you're already awake." "Yes, I didn't want to wake you. Do you have to go to work?" She grumbled in annoyance. "Yes."
My hand stroked the soft skin of her bare bottom. "Right now or do you have a little more time?"
She squinted at the clock and gave me a kiss. "Unfortunately, I have to get ready. But I can come back tonight."A miracle had indeed occurred, she didn't unleash a tornado as usual, but rose slowly, almost elegantly, and offered me a clear view of her naked body. Almost silently, she moved to the wardrobe and got dressed.
