When I opened my eyes, I was on the jet. "Where are we flying to again?" I called to the pilot up front. "Davao, Sir. Arrival in about 20 minutes."
Gradually, the events of the past hours came back to me. It was probably really the best idea to put some distance between myself and Usagi. Three men. What was she thinking? Had she even thought about it? Probably not. Who knew how many more men she had in the background?
My phone lay in front of me on the table; it looked pretty battered. I should really start stocking up on some backups; these modern things barely held up. I unlocked the display. 25 missed calls. 17 from Kaori, 2 from Haruka, 5 from Kunzite, and 1 from Father.
Call Father.
"Where are you?" he answered. "I'm on the jet to Davao." "What do you need to go there for? Saphir is in Tokyo, and you have the meeting tomorrow about..." "I know, Father. I'll attend the meeting via video call, just like the other appointments. But I needed a break from Tokyo. Don't worry, I'll be back in time for the notarization meetings, and Massaru will handle Saphir with Haruka's help," I interrupted him. "Good. And contact Kunzite; it seems important."
I began skimming through the incoming messages. Kaori was worried and wanted me to get in touch. Kunzite probably felt the same.
> I really hope you have a good explanation for your disappearance! Get in touch! < - Kunzite.
Then there was a message from Haruka.
> The singer has arrived at the hospital. There was quite a bit of stress here. Mrs. T. is now alone. < - Haruka.
Hmm... that would have been my chance. But when I thought about it, it was probably better that I was sitting here on the jet. Otherwise, I might have gone straight to her to confront her.
After arriving in Davao, I rented a car at the airport and drove to my small villa, my retreat and oasis of peace. Maria, the housekeeper, seemed surprised by my spontaneous arrival. "Oh, Mr. Prince, I didn't expect you today. Will you be staying longer?"
"I'm not sure yet. Could you please prepare my office upstairs?" I asked her.
I settled on the terrace and enjoyed the warming rays of the sun. Now I felt ready to call Kunzite. "Finally. Where are you?" he asked energetically. "Davao." "Are you out of your mind? Saphir is in Tokyo. Kaori tried to reach you all night. We thought something had happened to you." "No, I'm fine. I just needed a break from Tokyo. Haruka and Massaru are handling Saphir." "What happened?"
Of course, I couldn't hide anything from Kunzite. He could tell something had thrown me off balance.
"Is something wrong with Usagi?" "She had a car accident, but she's doing okay." "And why aren't you with her?"
I would have liked to be, if it weren't for that doctor sitting by her side. But I couldn't tell him that.
"Long story; I'll tell you when I'm back." "And when will that be?" "I don't know yet." "Okay, if anything comes up, call."
I kept reading the reports from Massaru and Haruka, staring at the pictures that appeared on my screen. There was Usagi, hand in hand with Seiya at the movies, their heads close together, lost in their own little world. Another picture showed her in a stunning dress, radiant and enchanting at Mamoru's side at the medical ball. There wasn't a single picture of us together. I urgently needed to find something to distract me from these thoughts. I couldn't keep going like this.
After I reached my office, I opened my laptop and threw myself into work. It was a simple way to not think about Usagi. At least for a moment, I could focus on something else.
