I didn't wait any longer and opened the door. For a moment, I froze. Who was that? A man sat by her bed, with short black hair, his hand on hers. The two seemed familiar with each other, even very familiar.
I struggled to maintain my composure and focused my gaze on Usagi. As best I could, I tried to block out the man next to her. I positioned myself at the foot of her bed and threw her a skeptical look. Her tension was palpable.
"Was it Saphir?" I asked calmly. It took a lot of self-control to stand there. My fists were clenched as I waited for her reaction. She glanced from the other man to me and back again.
"I... I can't tell you. The only thing I remember is a red car. First, it overtook me, then it kept braking in front of me, and finally the brakes failed... Suddenly, in the curve, there was this tree. The last thing I remember is pressing the button," she stammered, keeping her eyes on me.
I nodded. "I've already checked, your brakes were tampered with. I'm going to kill him!" I hissed angrily.
"Wait a minute. Can someone please explain what's going on here? Bunny, who is this guy? Why would anyone tamper with your brakes?" the man interjected. I didn't like that he still had his hand on hers. I had so many questions, but none of them concerned anyone else but us.
"Mamo, this is Diamond Prince... one of my regulars... at work and now a good friend of mine. Diamond, this is Mamoru... my... partner," Usagi murmured.
Did I just hear that right? Her partner?! It wasn't just me and the singer in her life, but also another man! This couldn't possibly be serious!
The man suddenly stood up and extended his hand to me, which I responded to with nothing but a disdainful glance. My focus remained on Usagi, who looked at me like a startled deer.
I wanted answers from her, now more than ever. Rage boiled within me. I needed to get out of here before I did something I would regret later.
"I see you're in good hands. I'll get in touch as soon as I find Saphir," I said coolly and headed for the door.
"Diamond, thank you," Usagi's voice echoed in my ears as I stormed out.
Thank you? Did she mean that seriously?
Haruka was waiting downstairs in the entrance area. I walked past her, but she easily kept pace and stayed close behind me.
"There's a man in her room. Mamoru something. I want a full report on him in an hour. Every little detail," I snapped at her. "Should I drop you off somewhere?" she asked. "No. I'm walking. Start on the report." Haruka nodded.
I wandered aimlessly through the dark streets. Her partner. This had to be a bad joke. And yet there he was, by her bed.
I sat down in a rundown bar, right at the counter. There were no other patrons, which wasn't surprising given the state of the place.
"The strongest thing you have, double," I said to the bartender. He slid a shot over to me and placed a half-full bottle next to it. "You look like a double won't be enough," he said with a grin. I nodded in thanks and downed my glass. "Tough day?" he tried to make small talk. I grunted in response and pulled out my phone. Hopefully, my gesture was clear enough that I wasn't interested in conversation. He should just do his job and pour me enough alcohol to numb the pain.
Several messages had come in.
