The door to my office swung open, and without looking up, I knew immediately who had graced me with his presence. I recognized him by the sound of his footsteps.
"So, now tell me what happened. I had my hands full with the usual daily business, not to mention searching for Saphir, and on top of that, I had to keep your father at bay so you could have some peace," Kunzite thundered, visibly irritated.
I lifted my head and glanced over at him. "Did you send your wife after me because of that?"
Kunzite grinned at me. "No, you brought that upon yourself. You know her. When she sets her mind to something, she gets it done, and as I see it, she was successful on all counts."
A frustrated grunt escaped me; after all, her goal was to bring me back to Tokyo. "I had no other choice. Besides, she was right. I needed answers."
Kunzite moved to the small bar, poured two glasses, and handed me one. "And have you gotten them yet?"
"Partially. It's much more complicated than I thought," I replied, accepting the glass gratefully. "What do you know so far?"
"A doctor got involved... Kaori wasn't very talkative since she had her own appointments. It's strange that she managed to keep this under wraps for so long."
I ran a hand through my hair. "Yes, she's had the doctor for several years... The doctor and the singer ran into each other at the hospital after her accident. Apparently, it didn't end well. According to Haruka, she hasn't seen either of them since then." I couldn't help but smile, and even Kunzite's lips twitched upward.
"Then this is your chance."
"I think we both need to be clear on what we want first. Until then, I'll try to avoid contact as much as possible. There's so much to think about: starting with Saphir, my father, and my own feelings. But when she stood in front of me earlier and started crying... It was the first time I felt helpless and didn't know what to do."
Kunzite silently sipped his drink and sank into thought. Just then, there was a knock at the door, and Masaru entered with a package.
"Boss, this was delivered downstairs from Sato's office. Also, I wanted to remind you about the notary appointment in half an hour."
I took the package from him, placed it on the desk, and opened it. A vase? I hadn't ordered anything. As I lifted the vase from the box, a small card fell out.
- Thank you, Diamond, for everything. Usagi - Kunzite read the card aloud after taking it from my hand. "A vase as a gift? Does that have a deeper meaning for you?"
While unfolding a second note, I replied, "Gift? Hardly. She included the bill as well." I glanced at the amount. At least the vase hadn't cost a fortune; it would hardly stand out among my expenses.
"Are you coming to the notary with me?" I asked Kunzite, who shook his head.
"Budget meeting. But let's spend a few days in Davao next week. The major appointments are all through by then, and I think a break would do us good."
"Kunz, I just came back from a break in Davao. My old man will give me hell if I take off again." A mischievous grin appeared on his lips, one I knew all too well. He already had a plan.
"Of course, we have official appointments there. I've prepared something that Uncle wouldn't consider a vacation, I know that. Just let me handle it," he said with a wink. Of course, he had something planned. I just hoped it was more sophisticated than the schemes from his teenage years. Father had always seen through us and shut down our plans before we could even begin.
