"giyuu?" you've searched the entire house by now, but he was still nowhere to be found.

giyuu had no reason to leave. ever since demons stopped appearing, the pillars only job was to train. and the training sessions usually take place in the mornings and afternoons. the water pillar intentionally comes home every night just to be with you, so his absence now made you uneasy.

maybe there was an emergency? or maybe he couldn't sleep and just decided to go train with one of the other pillars? that makes sense. but that uneasy feeling did not go away.

you slid the front door open, stepping out into the chilly night air.

something was wrong.

"[y/n]!" a familiar voice called from a distance.

your eyes darted up as you squinted at the blurry blob flying towards you. "hikari?"

when the crow finally landed in front of you, it landed clumsily. tripping over his own feet and tumbling onto the ground.

you kneeled, gently cupping him up into your hands before standing up. "what's wrong? are you okay?"

examining the crow, he didn't seem to be hurt. just out of breath.

"it's kibutsuji muzan!" he cawed, flapping his wings frantically. "oyakata-sama is dead and the pillars are gone!"

"what do you mean the pillars are gone?" panic washed over you, your mind immediately went to giyuu. is he alright?

"kibutsuji muzan found oyakata-sama a couple hours ago! i followed giyuu's crow to the estate and one moment we were there, the next we were in some kind of fortress." he explained in a rushed tone. "the pillars are all battling the uppermoons now and..." his voice trailed off and he peered up at you with hesitance.

your heart felt like a burden in your chest as you waited for what he was going to say next. "hikari?"

"giyuu and tanjiro are fighting uppermoon three... and..."

tears automatically blurred your vision. your lips were parted but no words came out, your voice stuck in your throat that was starting to burn.

"shinobu is dead."

you didn't know what to do, but you couldn't bear going back inside the estate, so you found yourself making your way to the butterfly mansion.

your fist was clenched hard enough for your nails to leave a mark on the soft skin of your palm. you shook your head, taking deep breaths in an attempt to get rid of this sick yet familiar feeling.

you had forced the tears to stop, not wanting ayumu or anyone else to see you like this. hikari trailed behind you, silent enough to make you forget he was even there.

you quietly entered the estate, walking through the dark hallways. you peered into the many rooms you walked past, all of them empty. not a single demon slayer corp in sight.

you eventually stopped in front of a closed door, taking a final deep breath before sliding it open.

you expected the lights to be off and your younger brother asleep in bed, but when you opened the door, light spilled out into the dark hallway while your brother was in bed with a book in his hand.

his eyes widened when he saw you, instantly shutting the book and throwing it aside. "i was just going to bed, i swear!" throwing his hands up in defense, he quickly added, "it's not even that late! it's only-" one glance at the clock on the wall and his excuse was cut short.
