you were running out of breath as you followed your crow, deeper into the mountains.

you felt your heart drop when you spotted something partially buried in the snow.

it was the head of taro, the dog that followed yae here.

just by the looks of it, you knew that they had encountered the demon, and knowing yae, you knew she had chased after it.

"this way!" your crow announced, flying forward.

you picked up your pace, silently hoping yae was safe.

"right there!" your crow exclaimed, stopping above a certain area.

as you neared, you noticed two blurry figures.

"yae—!"

a gun shot interrupted you as the girl shot at the demon in front of her.

guns don't work on demons.

another gun shot was heard as she aimed for its head.

it regenerated in an instant. the demon ran towards the girl with his hands outstretched, ready to sink its teeth into her skin.

with brute force, the demon jumped onto her, pushing her onto the snow.

yae had managed to put the gun in front of her, causing the demon to bite into the metal object.

the young girl was struggling to push it away, tears streaming down her face as she tried to understand how her father had became a demon.

not wanting to waste any more time, you quickly unsheathed the nichirn blade, trying to recall all the things your father had taught you.

holding the blade in a tight grasp, you ran towards the demon and swung your blade up, successfully slicing both of its hand off.

the demon let out a painful cry, taking a few steps back as blood from its severed arm dripped onto the snow.

"[y-y/n]..?" the girl breathed out as she looked up at you.

"yae, are you okay?" you quickly turn to her.

"i'm fine! i'm fine!" she nodded, wiping at the tears that had escaped.

"you need to stop doing this yae, everyone's worried about you," you sighed, pulling her up to her feet.

"i'm sorry, i just..." she choked on her words as she stared at the demon in front of her. "i don't understand..." she mumbled.

the demons' hand was slowly regenerating.

"come on, let's get out of here," you wrapped your fingers around her wrist, dragging her along with you.

you weren't skilled enough to kill a demon, the only thing you could do now was get away from it.

you heard snarling coming from behind you along with something cracking.

you turned around just in time to see the demon forming a sickle with its own skin. your eyes widened when it threw the weapon at the two of you.

"yae get down!" you quickly lowered yourself, pulling yae along with you. the sickle flew pass your frames, landing on a tree behind you.

the demon had fully regenerated now, running towards the two of you once again.

instinctively, yae picked up her gun and shot the demon in the face, causing it to lose its balance.

while stumbled its way over, trying to navigate its way over to you two. you quickly sliced one of its leg off to slow it down.

the demon fell over, its nails digging into the snow.

"run yae! run!" you quickly ran away from the demon.

the demons' leg started regenerating as it continued to chase after you two.

much to your dismay it grew another two sickle out of each hand, throwing it at you and the girl.

there was no time to avoid it, even if you could cut them, you could only slice one.

in that split second, you decided to prioritise yae, swinging your blade, you sliced the sickle that was coming her way in an instant.

you braced for the impact from the other sickle that was aimed at you. but it never came.

your eyes widened when you saw the person standing in front of you. the person who managed to stop the sickle from reaching you in time.

the familiar sight of the mismatched haori brought a sense of relief to you.

you felt a hand placing itself on your shoulder as a voice spoke.

"hello [y/n]-san, what a coincidence seeing you here~"
