"Elena be ready in five or im leaving without you!" Todays my first day working at Seattle Grace Hospital, I'm working as a surgical intern and scared doesn't even describe how I'm feeling.
My sister is a resident there, she's always been "one of the greats" in our family. I just happened to trail in her footsteps. I don't actually care that she's better because she's still my big sister. Although, she does have a cooler name. I mean seriously, how does one go from Calliope to Elena?
"Each of you comes here today hopeful, wanting in on the game. A month ago you were in Med School being taught by doctors, today, you are the doctors. The seven years you spend here as a surgical resident will be the best and worst of your life. You will be pushed to the breaking point. Look around you, say hello to your competition, 8 of you will switch to an easier specialty, 5 of you will crack under the pressure, 2 of you will be asked to leave. This is your starting line, this is your arena, how well you play? That's up to you" well isn't he a ball of sunshine.
As I look around me everyone has the same doe eyed expression on their face. "Which resident you assigned to, I got Bailey"
"The nazi? Me too."
The blond looks familiar, almost like I've seen her before.
"Me too" I chime in
"You got the nazi? So did I! I'm George O'Malley"
He seems nice, he needs a haircut but he's sweet, like Bambi almost.
"O'Malley, Yang, Grey, Torres, Stevens!"
"Bailey?"
"End of the hall"
"That's the Nazi?"
"I thought the Nazi would be a guy" says George
"I thought the Nazi would be..."
"A Nazi" I said
"Maybe it's professional jealousy, maybe she's brilliant, and they call her a Nazi because they're jealous!" I don't know her name but if cotton candy was a person it'd be her.
"Let me guess, you're the model" Yang and I laughed
"I have 5 rules, memorize them."
Definitely a Nazi.
"On call rooms, Attendings a hog them"
Based on what I've heard from Callie, they sure do
Dr Baileys pager started to beep and we all ran after her, when she moves, we move, rule #5.
We all ran up to the helipad to meet our patient, Katie Bryce, grand mal seizures. Dr Burke comes in and he looks all business. Meredith Grey, Ellis greys daughter, that's how I know her, she's a spitting image.
"Stevens honey, you get to do rectal exams"
Ouch.
Christina and I peer through the door looking at a surgery when Dr Bailey catches us. "What're you doing here?"
"U-Uh..."
"Katie Bryce's labs came in!" I say
"Yes we thought you'd like to know"
"Go away ladies."
"Yes dr Bailey."
A few hours later and we're all eating lunch.
"You hear Meredith is inbred?"
We all gave Christina the same look of what. The. Fuck.
"Her mothers Ellis grey"
"Shut up the Ellis grey!" Izzie exclaims
"Who's Ellis grey" asks George
We all start laughing
"The grey method" says Christina
"Where'd you go to med school, Mexico?" I ask
Meredith walks over so we all shut up
"Katie Bryce is a pain in the ass" she says
"You're telling me, try poking her with a needle. She asked me where I went to school five times as if the answer was gonna change" I say annoyed
Dr Burke comes over to tell us who gets the first solo surgery and we sat up so straight I think I broke my back.
"George O'Malley"
"Me? Did he say me?" Says George
I'm walking with Meredith when she suddenly stops after seeing the new attending and She drags me the other way.
"The hell are you doing?" I ask
"Walk with me Torres" she says firmly
We're only stopped when Dr Shepard drags her into another room.
In the surgery gallery George is the talk of the town. "Oh he's a fainter for sure"
"$15 says he cries"
"I'll put 20 on a total meltdown"
"$50 says he pulls the whole thing off." Says grey
"That's one of us down there, the first one of us, where's your loyalty?" She asks
"75 says he can't even I.D. The appendix"
"100 he forgets what a scalpel is" I join in
"Scalpel" he asks
Well I'm out. We all cheer until Burke cuts us off.
"Appendix is out" George says cheerfully
Well, he was cheerful until he ripped the cecum. He's 007.
"911 for Katie Bryce we gotta go Torres"
"Aw shit"
When we get up to Katie she's totally fine.
"I'm not a cruise director" says Meredith
"Little shit" i murmur
"Torres, manners"
"Sorry"
If I hear the word pageant one more time I might cry. The next few hours consisted of me running labs until Meredith and I made it to the pit. "Try spending 4 years in med school and let me know if it's the right diagnosis" Alex says to a nurse, rudely may I add.
"Dr Karev, we Like the nurses, we respect the nurses, respect this one too" i say
"Who the hell are you" he asks
"Elena Torres, we met at the mixer"
"Ohh yeahhh you're the girl I hooked up with after"
I can feel Meredith's side eye a mile away
"That would be me."
"She may not have pneumonia you know?" Says grey.
"She could be splinting or have a P.E." I add
"I hate nurses" Alex says to himself
"Did you just call me a nurse?" Asks Meredith
Oh god.
Meredith then looks at me, "damn it Katie"
"Ugh"
We mope up the stairs until we hear commotion coming from her room. We walk in and she's having another grand mal seizure with nurses yelling at us. And on top of that, Meredith freezes.
"How much on lorazepam?" I ask
"4 milligrams"
"You paged Dr. Bailey and Dr. Shepherd?"
No response
"Page them damn it" grey chimes in
"Phenobarbital, load her with it"
We're both freezing at this point
Meredith grabs a crash cart and starts charging the paddles
"Charge again"
"60 seconds, admit more drugs" says a nurse
"Charge it again" She states
"You heard her charge the damn paddles" I yell
"What the hell happened" asks Derek
"She had a seizure, her heart stopped" says Meredith
"Just go" he yells to both of us
"Meredith?" Christina and I both ask as she runs outside
Then she pukes in the bushes so we stop, I may be a surgeon but I draw the line at vomiting unless it's a patient.
"You tell anyone ever" She threatens
I overhear Derek and the Bryce parents arguing
"You have the audacity to stand here and say I don't know" Mr Bryce yells
"Mr and Mrs Bryce!" I jump in
They all state to look at me
"I'm Dr Torres, Elena Torres, one of the doctors on Katie's case. I assure you Dr Shepherd is the best, he may not have an answer for you right now but we will get to the bottom of this." Mr Bryce then begins to push back but I stop him.
"Sometimes the answer is "I don't know" but we will know, soon."
He backs off but then Derek looks at me.
"Well you better know because I don't and you basically promised those parents an answer"
After another few hours Derek holds a meeting for all us interns and tells us we need to figure out what's wrong with Katie.
Awhile later Christina knows that Meredith slept with Derek and we figured out what was wrong with Katie! Meredith got to scrub in with him even though she didn't want to.
48 hours later it was time to go home. "How was your first shift" Callie asked. "I don't know if I want to drink or sleep." I responded. She laughed and drove us both home.

I'll probably be skipping around a few episodes because the premise is Amelia and she doesn't come in until a little later.
