Whispers followed me as I walked through the school hallways the next morning. The rumors about Tsukishima and me were still rampant, and it seemed like everyone had something to say. I kept my head down, trying to ignore the curious glances and hushed conversations.
As I entered the classroom, I saw Mr. Toud standing at the front, waiting for everyone to settle down. I took my seat, glancing around the room. Tsukishima was already there, looking as indifferent as ever. Our eyes met briefly before I quickly looked away.
"Good morning, class," Mr. Toud began. "Today, we're starting a new project. It's a partner assignment, and you'll be working on an important event in history. I've already assigned the pairs, so listen carefully."
He started reading off names, and my heart sank when I heard mine paired with Tsukishima's. Just my luck. I glanced over at him, and he looked equally unimpressed.
"Blackfire and Tsukishima," Mr. Toud confirmed, sealing our fate.
I sighed, gathering my things as the class ended. Tsukishima approached me, his expression neutral.
"Guess we're stuck together," he said flatly.
"Seems that way," I replied, trying to keep my irritation in check.
"We can work at my place after school," he suggested. "It's quieter."
"Fine," I agreed, though the idea of spending more time with him was far from appealing.
After school, I made my way to Tsukishima's house. It was a short walk from school, and the silence between us was heavy. When we arrived, he led me to his room, which was surprisingly neat.
"Let's just get this over with," I muttered, sitting down at his desk.
We started brainstorming ideas for our project, but it didn't take long for us to start arguing.
"That's a terrible idea," he said, dismissing one of my suggestions.
"Oh, and your idea is so much better?" I shot back, rolling my eyes.
We went back and forth, bickering over the smallest details. After what felt like an eternity, we finally settled on a topic and began working in earnest. The tension between us was palpable, but we managed to get some work done.
As we worked, I tried to make small talk, but Tsukishima ignored me, focusing entirely on the project. His silence grated on my nerves, and finally, I couldn't take it anymore.
"I'm done," I said, packing up my things. "I'll work on my part at home."
Tsukishima looked up, frowning. "Why are you leaving?"
"Because you're impossible to work with," I snapped. "I'll just do my share on my own."
He stood up, stepping closer. "Are you leaving to go see Kuroo?"
I blinked, taken aback. "What? No, why would you think that?"
His eyes narrowed, and he took another step closer. "Because it seems like you'd rather spend time with him than do anything else."
I felt a strange tension building between us as he moved even closer. "What's that supposed to mean?" I asked, my voice faltering.
He didn't answer, his gaze intense. The space between us seemed to shrink, and I could feel the heat radiating off him. My heart started to race, and I couldn't tell if it was from anger or something else entirely.
"Tsukishima, what are you doing?" I whispered, my voice barely audible.
He reached out, his hand brushing a strand of hair behind my ear. "I don't know," he admitted, his voice just as soft.
For a moment, we just stood there, the air thick with unspoken words and unresolved feelings. The tension between us was electric, and I felt a strange pull towards him, despite everything.
But before anything else could happen, I stepped back, breaking the spell. "I need to go," I said, my voice shaky.
Tsukishima didn't try to stop me this time. He just watched as I grabbed my things and hurried out of his room, my mind a whirlwind of confusion and conflicting emotions.
As I walked home, I couldn't shake the feeling that something had shifted between us, something I wasn't ready to face just yet. But one thing was clear: this project was going to be more complicated than I had ever imagined.
