I arrived at Sario's house, feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness. It was a relief to get a break from everything and spend time with my friends. Sario greeted me at the door with a big smile and a hug.
"Hey, you made it! Come on in," she said, pulling me inside.
I followed her into the living room, where I saw a group of familiar faces. Tanaka, Daichi, Asahi, and Yachi were all there, chatting and laughing. It was good to see them, and for a moment, I felt a sense of normalcy.
"Hey, everyone," I said, smiling as I joined them.
"Blackfire! Glad you could make it," Daichi said, giving me a nod.
"Yeah, it's been a while," Asahi added with a warm smile.
Tanaka and Yachi waved, and I felt myself relax a little. This was what I needed—a chance to hang out and forget about the drama for a while.
But then I saw him. Tsukishima was sitting on the couch, looking as aloof as ever. Our eyes met for a brief moment before I quickly looked away, determined to avoid any confrontation tonight.
I spent most of the evening trying to steer clear of Tsukishima. It wasn't easy, especially in such a small group, but I managed. I focused on catching up with the others, laughing at Tanaka's jokes and listening to Asahi's stories.
"Are you okay?" Yachi asked me quietly at one point, noticing my efforts to avoid Tsukishima.
"Yeah, I'm fine," I said, forcing a smile. "Just needed a break from everything."
She nodded understandingly. "I get it. If you need anything, just let me know."
"Thanks, Yachi," I said, grateful for her support.
Despite my best efforts, there were a few moments when I couldn't avoid Tsukishima. At one point, we both reached for a drink at the same time, our hands brushing against each other. I quickly pulled away, muttering an apology and moving to the other side of the room.
As the evening wore on, I did my best to enjoy myself. It was nice to be surrounded by friends, even if one of them was the source of my current stress. I laughed, chatted, and tried to push thoughts of Tsukishima out of my mind.
By the time the night was winding down, I felt a little more at ease. Avoiding Tsukishima had been exhausting, but at least I had managed to have some fun.
As we were saying our goodbyes, Tsukishima approached me. I tensed, unsure of what to expect.
"Can I walk you home?" he asked, his tone surprisingly soft.
I hesitated, then nodded. "Sure."
We left Sario's house together, the night air cool and quiet. We walked in silence for a while, the tension between us palpable.
Finally, Tsukishima spoke. "I wanted to apologize for what happened the other day."
I looked at him, surprised. "You mean the kiss?"
He nodded, his expression serious. "Yeah. It was a mistake. It was in the heat of the moment, and I shouldn't have let it happen."
I felt a pang of hurt at his words, but I tried to keep my voice steady. "I get it. Things were intense, and we were both caught up in the moment."
He looked at me, his eyes searching mine. "I don't want things to be awkward between us. We have to see each other at school, and I'd like for us to at least be civil."
I nodded, though my heart felt heavy. "Yeah, I agree. Let's just try to get along."
We continued walking in silence, the weight of his words hanging between us. When we reached my house, I turned to him.
"Thanks for walking me home," I said quietly.
He gave a small nod. "No problem. See you at school."
As I watched him walk away, I couldn't help but feel a mix of emotions. His apology had been sincere, but it also left me feeling more confused than ever. I knew I needed to keep things professional, but part of me couldn't shake the memory of that kiss and the feelings it had stirred.
With a sigh, I headed inside, determined to sort through my thoughts and figure out where to go from here.
