Movement of the car stirred me in my sleep. The quiet sound of the engine rumbled in slight vibrations beneath me. I slowly open my eyes, peering out the window and seeing the moon still hitting the miles of sand around us.

My head lifts from the head of the seat as I rub my eyes and subtly glance at Simon's figure. His posture was straight, just like when I fell asleep, we've been driving for hours now and he doesn't even seem tired, I don't understand him...

I huff and look at the time and see that it was 3am.

Does he even know I'm awake?

I rub my eyes again, this time yawning loudly before staring at the road. I'm curious about his voice, how his lips move when he speaks, no one can sit here for three whole days in the silent company of a stranger like Simon.

I lick my lips, wanting something to eat, but I was too afraid to ask. Plus it's 3am so food will just have to wait.

I: Aren't we stopping at a motel or something?

I finally ask, turning my head to look at him. Simon didn't answer. As usual, he just kept his head straight.

I wanted nothing more than to scream at him, but I take a deep breath and try to calm myself down. This man drives me crazy! And he didn't even say a word!

I: Will we ever stop and eat somewhere? I mean, I know it's 3 a.m. but I'm so hungry.
S: Don't make me shoot you.

My mouth went dry as my jaw dropped slightly in shock. His voice was so rough yet so soft and he had a strong British accent that turned my stomach.

His threat took all the words out of my mouth, just as he intended. Don't make me shoot you. Now I know for sure that he doesn't like me.

As much as I longed to contradict him so that he would keep talking to me, I stayed silent because I knew that this was probably the best thing I had gotten out of him this entire trip.

I fell asleep for about another two hours until the sun came up. When I open my eyes, the blinding light causes me to squint until my eyes adjust. Then I realize we were at a gas station in the middle of nowhere and Simon was no longer next to me.

The gas station was small, old in fact, when we passed by I thought it was out of service. When I turn to the left I see Simon filling up the tank. As I look back at the concession store, I bite my bottom lip, feeling hungry from all the snacks that must be in there.

Simon can't leave me hungry the whole trip, can he? Or maybe he can.

I resolutely get out of the car, the thick and hot air hits me, I approach him carefully, keeping my hands behind my back.

I: Simon?

His head doesn't even turn to look up at me, he just keeps filling the tank. He irritates me so much but I have no choice but to tolerate it.

I: Can I have some money? You know, to eat something. I'm really hungry.

His large hand hits the hood of the car, making me jump. When he pulls his hand back I see a ten dollar bill lying there.

I: Uh-thanks.

I grab the money and walk through the concession store. My eyes immediately wander over the freezers in the background as an old man at the checkout flips through the pages of a magazine.

The sound of the bell caused him to look up at me and give me a smile. I smile back politely, knowing I should get what I need and leave before Simon tries to get back on the road.

The freezers were filled with tempting things, but I just grab a can of Coca Cola for me and Simon. I then kneel down to grab a packet of chips, but am completely taken back when I hear a distant bang.
