It's been 3 years since my dad passed, 3 years of hardship and love. I moved in with Asher and his cat Captain last spring. It's been a roller-coaster of emotions, but I'm happy.
Sam and Charles, (and yes, I have finally learned his name) got married a year ago, it was a small ceremony, but it was lovely. Sam was truly glowing and Charles looked like he had been shot by cupid. I never thought that Sam would get married, she's a wild spirit but somehow it worked. She found the person she would roam free with. Some may say that two so different from one another shouldn't marry, but if you meet the one then why not? Sam is now Sam Walker. She ran so that I could walk, and I am in no rush to get married, after all it feels like I am in a way. However, watching Sam getting married made me wonder about what the future holds for me and Asher.
We've never talked about the future like that, but I am in no rush. But I could see myself getting married and being Mrs. Grey. It does have a nice sound to it. Dawn Grey.
''Ready to go?'' Asher says as he leans down to give me a kiss. I give him a smile and we head of to the shelter. I've been nagging about getting another cat, since Captain looks a bit lonely. He too needs a partner to share his days with. The animal shelter is quiet and we're the only once there. Us and the woman in the reception. ''Hello, how may I help you today?'' she says smiling. ''We're here to look at some cats.'' I say,
feeling a chill down my spine. My own cat, how fun. She leads us back to where all the cats are, and there's plenty. Kittens, cats who are ill and old. Then there's the cat's that's about to be put to sleep. I don't dare look at them, my heart will ace, and I will probably start to cry. She shows us the kittens and talk us through their personalities. They're all adorable, but not a single one makes me feel like they belong with us. After all, Captain is an old man who is a bit of a drama Queen. He would probably eat the poor thing. ''Hey, look at this one'' Asher says, I head over to look at the cat and my heart drops. The cat has a thick fur, his white with brown spots over him. One side of his face is white like snow and the other brown with white spots. His missing an eye, but the one he has is black like the night. I look at the sign,
Age: 8. Race: House Cat. Health: Castrated, missing eye. OBS. Will be put to sleep 1\5
That's tomorrow. But I knew the moment I laid my eyes on him that his the one. ''This is the one'' I say to the lady. She raises her eyebrows and gives me a concerned look.''Are you sure? His not used to people and other animals.'' her voice gives of a warning, like we should pick another cat. But I've made up my mind. His coming home with us. We fill out the papers and head home with our brand-new family member. ''So, what should we call him?'' I look at the cat in his cage and think hard.
Maybe Curtis? No. It has to be something special; he is after all one of a kind. ''How about Vinegar Tom? Like from Sabrina? And Tom for short?'' Asher gave out a chuckle, ''Vinegar Tom it is then.'' I was more than nervous over introducing Captain and Vinegar Tom, but I read online that the new cat should start out in a separate room. So, I placed Tom in our bedroom where I'd already set up a litterbox, food and some toys. He was super shy the first hours and didn't dare to move from underneath the bed. But once he did, he was all over the place, looking through the window and jumping up at the dresser. But when he heard Captain meow outside the door his ears pointed straight up, Tom gently walked over to the door to sniff out who it was on the other side while me and Asher watched like amused children. And Captain screamed even more when he noticed that there was a new mister in town, but not the scream he did when he was mad. It was his attention scream, which we did not expect. ''Maybe It's okay to open
the door?'' Asher whispered. ''Maybe, but if there's a fight, you'll be the one to stop them.'' Asher nodded and gently opened the door to Captain, who rushed straight in the room. Not really noticing Tom standing there. Well, not until Tom came up from behind him and started smelling him. And Captain looked like he was head over heels, he lied down and started purring.
And Tom? Tom started to clean him like they'd known each other their whole life. ''I think it's love at first sight.'' Asher chuckled at the two of them, cleaning each other and playing like two kittens.''They look like an old married couple, don't you think?''
''Like you and I then?'' Asher laughed as he kissed my cheek. We are like an old married couple, two grumpy lovers intertwined. How ever we almost never argue, the closest we are to an argument is when I'm hangry. Which is once a month when I'm on my period. My eyes wonder off to Vinegar Tom and Captain, two strangers who have fallen madly in love at first sight. I too felt love at first sight when I saw Asher.''Hey Ash?''
''Yes love?'' my heart flusters at the sound of his voice, sending chills down my spine.
''Did you fall madly in love with me, like love at first sight?'' he grunts a little, like the question I asked was silly. ''Yes. I could never stop thinking of you. I remember seeing you the very first day at the assembly. Your beauty was out of this world. Still is.''
''You don't mean that...''
''No, I do. I yearned for you from distance, wanting you. And when I had you, I knew
that I could never be without you.'' he drags a hand through his hair as his face turns pink. ''You know, I used to hate you.'' his eyes flare up, like he can't grasp of what I'd just said. ''Why?''''Well mainly because I was sure you were a fuck boy. And mostly, for poison my mind. And making me love you.'' I giggled a little, today I could never hate him.
All there is, is love. It's all there has ever been.
