"Chloe" my blood froze and my face turned from a frown into a really sad or even scared look "Cassie" I heard her stumble towards the stairs and shot up from my bed

"Is that-"I didn't let Cole finish his sentence before starting my own

"Go stay with cass, make sure she doesn't hear anything"

"Cass is asleep and you're not going there on you own Mel"

"Cole come on" he looked at me clenching his jaw

"I'll be waiting here but if I hear something I don't like I'm coming down" I sighed leaving him behind on the top of the stairs while I slowly crept downstairs

"Where are you all ?" I followed the voice until I saw her standing in the kitchen, I just watched her quietly for a second

"Mom"

"Chloe where is Cassandra ?" I walked a little closer still keeping a good distance between us

"Cassie is sleeping, it's late and she has school tomorrow" she reached up towards the cupboard with the glasses and cups in it trying to open it, I watched her a little until I decided to step in, taking a glass out and filling it with water "You should get to sleep too mom"

"Why aren't you sleeping ? Don't you have school ? You should go to school" she took the glass and started drinking from it with a shaky hand

"I have school too" I held my hand out to catch the glass in case she dropped it "Let's get you to sleep first yeah ?"

"I'm fine I can do that myself" she moved around with her arms while talking quite loudly, I turned my head to look if Cole was coming but my head spun back when I heard glass breaking "oh no, I'll clean that up oh shit I dropped-"

"Mom stop" I grabbed her arms to stop her from reaching for the floor "Don't worry about that, come on let's get you upstairs" I tiptoed around a little to avoid the broken glass

Cole came downstairs when he saw us and helped me bring her upstairs

"What was that sound ?"

"A glass broke, no big deal"

"Oh Cole" we both looked at my mother while we slowly went up the stairs "I always wished I had a son, instead I got these useless daughters" I bit my teeth, she didn't really know what she was saying right now. At least that's what I kept telling myself  "I wish my first born would've been a boy" we helped her into her room without saying anything

I covered her in her blanket and left the room closing the door behind me, I stood there leaning my forehead against the door and just taking a breath

"She didn't mean all that, she's drunk" I turned around to see Cole standing on the other end of the hallways

"No she did mean it.  Drunk words are sober thoughts huh ?"

"You're a good daughter Mel, and an amazing sister" I let out a shaky breath feeling tears trying to make their way up to my eyes, Cole and I were rarely openly kind to each other but he always knew when I just needed some nice words instead of our playful mockery "I would be really proud if I had you as a daughter" that was the last bit that I needed for the tears to fall, I bit my teeth nodding a little

"Thanks" I sniffled wiping my tears away "your mom told you not to be too late"

"My mom doesn't actually care if I come home at all as long as I'm with you" he laughed making me laugh out too "but I should go and you should go to sleep" I followed him downstairs this time to grab my mother some painkillers and water for the morning

I went into the kitchen and saw all the glass shreds on the floor remembering that I had to clean that up too, I sighed and started picking the  bigger pieces up by hand so I could sweep the rest

"Shit" I dropped the glass back down looking at my hand with a whole lot of blood running down it and a piece still sticking in my hand

"You alright ?"

"Yeah just- a cut" I just looked at my hand taking a breath to gather my thoughts

"A cut ?" Cole entered the kitchen frowning at me "woah shit" he grabbed my hand and looked at it before letting it go again and grabbing a towel

"Cole I've got this seriously it's just a cut"

"There's glass sticking in your hand Mel this could mean that you need stitches you know ?"

"I'll survive without"

"Uh huh" he held my hand again with the towel this time "this is gonna sting"

"Yea-ah" he held the towel on top of where he just pulled the glass out putting pressure on the cut "that hurts"

"I know"

"Are you sure that's right ?"

"My mom's a doctor Belle do you know how often she did this for me ? A whole lot. I was a stupid child" he lifted the towel from my hand carefully looking at the cut "I don't think you need stitches though, it doesn't look too deep"

"I told you it's nothing"

"Sit down and put more pressure on it" I did as he said, sitting at the table and watching him clean the glass pieces up from the floor

"I just wanted to sleep"

"How do you think cass will react to your mother being here ?" I sighed laying my head on the table

"I don't know when she's leaving, she'll probably still be asleep when we leave for school tomorrow and if we have any luck she might be gone by the time we get back, she usually is"

"What about the sleepover if she doesn't leave ?" I looked back up at him

"I forgot about the sleepover... well let's just hope she'll be gone by then"
