I kept an eye on the door during my whole shift on Tuesday, he hadn't mentioned when exactly he was coming so I just had to wait... maybe he wasn't coming at all, that was for sure a possibility

"Mel" Cole nodded his head to the customer waiting in the front, I turned to her and smiled taking her order and giving her what she wanted "what's up with you today ?"

"What do you mean ?"

"You're acting weirder than usual" I rolled my eyes at him when I heard the front door opening again

I turned around to really see him walking in with that bright smile, he met my eyes while walking up to the front

"I'm not acting weird at all, go do whatever it is you're doing back there" I quickly hissed back to Cole watching him go to the back, I walked up to the register smiling at the customer

"Hello, what can I do for you today ?" I just said my usual phrase not really knowing how else to start

"Hi" he smiled back to me and I could've sworn I felt my knees go a little weak when he flashed me that smile "uh I'd like a piece of the red velvet cake"

"Is that to eat here or to go ?"

"I'll eat it here"

"I'll bring it right up" he sat at the same table he sat at last time he was here and for a second where I reached for a plate I realised how insane this was

I had talked to this guy maybe a total of ten times, only one of them being an actual conversation on the phone while the others had been text messages, so how did I feel this way ?

How did the guy I've known for like a week make me feel this... much ?

"There you go" I placed the plate on the table and looked back for a second to see if there were any new customers before returning my attention to him "I wasn't sure if you'd actually come here again"

"What ? I told you that I'm coming back, this cake is too damn good" I smiled shaking my head a little looking around the cafe again

"You couldn't force your brother with you this time ?"

"I could've, but you said you wanted to stay private" I looked at him feeling warm around my heart for a second before blinking and looking away, I didn't think that he would actually think that far or care that much

"Melly, customer" I turned around when I heard Cole's voice to find a woman standing at the front looking through the cake choice

I gave her the pieces she had chosen and wished her a good day, waiting until she left before turning my back to the register

"You know you work here too right ?" I asked Cole walking to the back where he was

"Yeah but you're just so much better at it"

"Yeah of course, that is 100% it" i nodded sarcastically "I'm taking my break, you're on your own"

"You're mean"

"Only to you" I grabbed my water bottle and debated wether it would be weird to go and sit with Walker but finally decided that it couldn't be that weird after talking on the phone for hours on Saturday

I pulled out the chair opposite of his making him look up from his phone and smile at me

"Ditching work for me now ?"

"I'm on my break, not everything is about you Scobell"

"Oh of course" he set his phone aside and turned his entire attention to me "how did the birthday go ?"

"Good. Better than the sleepover for sure" I knew from the way his eyes wandered over my face that he was still very curious about what happened that night

It wasn't the fact that I didn't trust him, because I did. As strange as it seemed I felt more comfortable and trusting talking to him than some people I had known for years, I just wasn't ready to show him how difficult I really was yet. I enjoyed being a normal and easy kid for a change

"You know what I thought about ?" He pulled me out of my own thoughts "I have no idea when your birthday is"

"You don't ?" He shook his head, which made me grin a little "take a guess"

"Oh come on Mel I'm terrible at guessing we already went through that" I laughed remembering his horrible guesses at the games we played over the phone the other day

"Let's get the month first, it's a 1/12 you can't do that bad" I encouraged him

"Okay" he looked at me thinking about it for a moment "October ?"

"No"

"Was I close ?"

"Uh... a little, sure"

"July ?"

"We're getting closer"

"August ?"

"No"

"May

"Dude"

"I told you I'm bad at it" he looked a little frustrated and I couldn't help but think that he kinda looked really cute like that

"One last try and I'll tell you"

"June"

"Yes"

"Really ?"

"Yeah, I'm a June girl" I smiled taking a sip from my water

"So June...?" He raised his eyebrows at me "nu uh I'm not doing it again" he immediately called the guessing off when I raised my brows

"Okay fine, June 2nd"

"June 2nd" he repeated in a whisper nodding "I mean I would tell you mine but I'm sure you know it already"

"Don't flatter yourself Scobell I did not spent my time researching you"

"So you don't know my birthday ?" I stayed quiet narrowing my eyes at him seeing the smirk on his face grow wider

"I don't" I did know it. And I knew that he knew it from that smug expression on his face as he leaned back and nodded

"Okay"

Authors note:
Well I wanted to fix my sleeping schedule since I start school on Wednesday but I somehow ended up reading until 1 Am after being in a horrible reading slump since like march 😭
I read 200 pages today and I am really debating whether I should fuck sleep and just keep reading or try to be a little normal and just go to sleep...
