"You still haven't told Cassie ?"

"No..."

"Mel"

"I'm going to"

"When ?"

"It's not like we're a thing Des, we're friends"

"Really close friends who are so in love with each other" I rolled my eyes at her and sat down on the couch

"You're exaggerating a lot"

"Uh huh, what do you say to that Cole ?"

"I'm just here to hang out with Cass I don't actually know who that Walking guy is" he shrugged looking a little confused and disinterested

"We've been over it already Colton, he's the Percy Jackson guy" Destiny showed a picture to him and I watched his eyes grow in realisation

"Wait. You're talking to a famous guy ?"

"I'm actually starting to worry about your brain dumbass"

"You never showed me a picture" we heard the front door open and saw my sister walking by the next second, she stopped when she saw us and came in to sit besides Destiny who had her dog, nala, by her side

"I actually hate school"

"You're a real one" Cole held out a hand to high five her but she just looked at it before turning back to nala "ouch" I grinned at the sight since Cole had no doubt been Cassies favourite forever which he also knew, the two of them were really close which is honestly amazing

"I need to take Nala on a walk"

"I'll take her" Cassie got up turning to Destiny "where's the leash ?" She got the dog ready and was about to head out when I heard her shout my name "Mel ?"

"Yeah ?"

"Come here. Quick" I frowned at my friends while getting up to see what she was talking about, my face fell the second I laid eyes on the door

"You've got to be kidding me" I whispered watching my mother struggling to get her keys out of the door

"Chloe, can you help me get this out dear" I was surprised and almost taken aback by her tone, she almost sounded sober

"Yeah" I said quietly after realising what was happening for a second, I pulled the key out and handed it to her watching her say a quick thanks before casually going inside, I watched her until she was out of my eyesight before turning back to Cassandra who did the same "go walk Nala Cass I'll handle this" my sister nodded leaving through the front door leaving me alone

I took a breath and shook my head before following to where I watched my mother disappear into the kitchen

"Don't you have any food ? I'm starving"

"There's some leftovers in the fridge" I watched her get the food and sit down at the table "what are you doing ?" She looked up at me seeming very confused by my question

"I live here ?" My brain genuinely couldn't fully comprehend that she was sober, she had never come home sober before

"Mom"

"You're always so quick to judge Chloe" she reached over the table to take my hand, I wanted to pull it away, I really wanted to but all I could do was stand there and look at her hand on top of mine "I'm here honey you can let that brave Fassade down"

"I'm good" I pulled my hand away and walked into the living room where both Cole and Destiny looked up when they saw me entering

"What just happened ?"

"I don't know"

I saw down letting it go over my head again I'm here honey you can let that brave Fassade down was she kidding me ? I felt the hairs rise on my arms

She always did this. She did it at cassies sleepover, on my birthday even at my middle school graduation. She came into my life acted like everything was amazing and great and fun and showed me the mother I could have, the sweet, caring and understanding mother that is right there but just out of reach sadly

I couldn't change her doing, so I decided a long time ago that I would not let her get to me anymore. She never meant any of her words seriously anyways

"What are you gonna do ?" Destiny whispered to me pulling me out of my thoughts

"I don't know" I could see that wasn't the answer she was looking for, it isn't the one I wanted to give either but I genuinely just did not know what to do

It's her house, I couldn't kick her out. I would just have to accept it and I did truly believe that she would be gone by the next morning anyways

"She'll just stick around I guess"

"Where's Cassie ?"

"I sent her out with Nala, I need a second" I didn't want my sister to see me this confused by something, in her eyes I always had a solution to anything and I wanted to keep that image up "I'll just let her stick around until she does something seriously wrong and annoying" I shrugged "I can't do much more"
