THREE. It took Nessa three days to go home that time. Last time she had run, she had gone for two weeks making Lucas go out of his mind. She had been so stressed about the marriage and about the pregnancy and about Justin still being on the lose that she had gone into survival mode again. She had stayed away longer than Lucas had thought she would when he told her to run. That time it had only taken her three days to go back to her husband.
Her running was becoming less and less frequent as the weeks went by and less and less possible with the size of her pregnant belly.
"What time did you say we have the appointment?" Lucas looked at his watch once again and frowned. The doctor was late again, and he was not happy about it.
"Three-thirty, why?" Nessa flipped through the magazine that she had bought that morning. According to the images of the week-to-week development of the fetus she was as big as a six-month pregnant woman.
The kid was going to be huge, she thought. She looked at Lucas and frowned. He was massive, there was no doubt that her kid would be huge.
"The doctor is late again, and I don't like it. What if there is an emergency? Can we count on her to be there? or will she be late as well?"
Nessa noticed that as the weeks went by Lucas' mood got crabbier and sour. He was moody all the time and snapping at all the employees. It wasn't sexual frustration because Nessa pounced on him every chance she got. She loved how he always turned her around whether they were standing, sitting on a chair or on the bed, so Lucas could hold her swollen belly as he thrust inside her. He was so turned on by the fact that she was growing his child inside her that sex was a constant in their life. No. Something else was making her husband moody.
"Babe, why don't you just relax and breathe for me, okay. I'm sure the doctor is late because she is taking care of her patients like she takes care of me."
"I pay her good money for this shit not to happen every single time," he said and began to grumble.
Nessa lay on the exam table and watched as the doctor nervously moved the wand over her belly. Lucas had chewed her ass out the moment they had walked into her office. The poor woman had paled considerably, and Nessa felt bad for her, but she let Lucas do what made him feel better. The doctor's face grew more serious as she looked at the monitor. She checked and re-checked everything before she turned it, so she and Lucas could see.
"I must apologize for this. I don't understand how this could have happened," the doctor began speaking with a soothing tone and Nessa became rigid immediately.
"What's wrong?" Lucas took his wife's hand and gave it a little squeeze for reassurance and smiled at her telling her that everything was going to be alright.
"It's not usual for this to happen but has been known to occur in some cases."
Nessa looked at the doctor then at Lucas refusing to look at the monitor. There was an echo to the baby's heartbeat and that was making her tear up. Did her baby have a heart condition the doctor missed when she did the last ultrasound? What?
"For Pete's sake woman would you please just tell us what the hell you missed," Lucas said, and snapped at the jittery doctor.
"It seems that you are not having a baby."
"The hell I'm not." Nessa sat up on her elbows. "Have you seen the size of me, woman?" Nessa used Lucas' favorite line which caused him to chuckle.
"You are having babies, as in twins." The doctor began to point the babies out. One baby was hiding behind the other giving the impression that it was only one baby.
