"Which people will count as my guardian?" She asks him with a smile as if they are talking about the weather.
The police officer looks at her for a minute before he sighs "Dekh agar tujhe jail se bahar ana hai toh apne ghar pe call kar aur apne maa baap ko bula le"
(See if you want to come out of the jail you should call your parents at home)
"I already told you she doesn't have family-" I start informing him before I am cut by Aadriti.
"Husband nahi chalega kya?" Aadriti asks.
(Won't husband work?)
The police officer looks at her in surprise while I stare her wondering what she is saying.
"Tera iss Umar main pati bhi hai?" The officer asks in amusement.
(You have a husband in this age?)
"Main Rajsthan se hu na! Humare yaha aisa hi hota hai" Aadriti assures him with a easy smile.
(I am from Rajasthan, that's what happens there)
The police officer side eyes me and then looks at Aadriti "Theek hai fir, tere husband ko bula sign karne"
(Okay then call your husband to sign)
"Naam kya hai uska" He asks as he opens the register writing down something.
(What is his name?)
"Agastya Kulkarni!" I turn around in shock as Aadriti smiles at me.
"Agastya Kulkarni, rehta kaha hai? Uska phone number bata" The officer asks noting it down.
(Where does he lives, tell me his phone number)
Understanding the situation I decide to go along with Aadriti to end this fiasco so I stay quiet and let her do the talking.
"Uski jarurat nahi hai sir, see he is standing here" Aadriti points at me removing her hand from the bars.
(There is no need for that sir)
The officer slams the pen on the desk and glares at us.
"Mere maathe pe kya pagal likha hai?" He asks in anger "ye tera pati kaise ho sakta hai?"
(Is there idiot written on my forehead, how can he be your husband?)
"Kyu? kyu nahi ho sakta ye mera pati? Kya kami hai isme?" Aadriti questions back.
(Why? Why can't he be my husband, what is wrong with him?)
"Usme koi kami nahi ladki, par isko dekh ke Aisa nahi lagta ye bichara tujhe zhel payega" The officer stands up from his place walking near us.
(There's nothing wrong with him girl, but it doesn't look like he will be able to handle you)
"Bichara? Abhi toh aap uspe itne gande gande aarop laga rahe the!" Aadriti glares at him.
(Innocent? A few minutes ago you were accusing him of bad things)
"Galti hogayi meri, mujhe laga tha-" The officer holds his head in frustration.
(I made a mistake, I thought that-)
"Can I sign and take her out of here?" I ask trying to end the banter between them.
The officer stares at me for a long second he comes closer making me take a step back as I press myself on the bars where Aadriti is standing.
"Tu sach main iska pati hai?" He asks in concern and I quickly nod my head.
