27 - Revelations

"Wait what?" Margaret let go of your wrist and you took a couple steps back.

You rocked on your feet. "Well, they're all dating people."

The old woman looked utterly confused. "No they aren't. How did you come to that conclusion?"

You sighed. "Well I'm pretty sure Gojo and another girl named Mei Mei are dating. I mean . . . she kind of hinted at it when I was with her last. Said something about her and him making the perfect couple. And then I thought maybe I was wrong and he was dating some nurse - but he said he wasn't. But then I figured, there's no way he's single. So he has to be dating Mei Mei and just wasn't disclosing!"

Margaret pinched her nose. "Oh for goodness sake. Okay fine. Who's Megumi dating?"

"Nobara! That other girl we're traveling with." You bit the inside of your cheek. "I mean, Gojo kind of said they'd make a good couple once. And then they were acting all weird. And then when the whole issue with the rooms came up, Nobara offered to bunk with me. Well . . . Megumi seemed a little deflated."

The sweet old lady looked three seconds away from jumping out of a window. "Okay. That covers three of them. Now explain Yuta."

"Well he had a childhood crush on a girl named Rika."

" . . . " Margaret groaned. "You're . . . kidding right?"

You tilted your head. "No. He did."

"How long ago was this?"

"Oh . . . somewhere between ten and thirteen years ago."

" . . . (Y/n) . . . what does a crush have to do with dating someone? Is the girl still around?"

You shook your head. "Oh no. She uhh . . . she kind of kicked the bucket years ago."

This time Margaret did facepalm. "So you're afraid of dating Yuta cause you think he's in love with this girl who's been off the face of the planet for thirteen years. Okay noted. Who's Yuji dating?"

Okay, this one was going to be a little more complex for you to explain to her without revealing Sukuna. After all, she was a mere civilian.

What would she know about curses and classified information?

"Well," you scratched your arm, "when we were younger Yuji saved this girl Yuko Ozawa. He did something really dangerous to protect her."

"And you think they're dating because of that?"

You shrugged. "I mean yeah. I've met her before. It's pretty obvious that she's into him."

Margaret's exasperation was palpable as she processed your explanations. So you noticed other people's feelings - but you didn't notice when they were directed to you? Her face was a mix of disbelief and frustration.

"Alright, let's review. You believe Gojo is dating Mei Mei, Megumi is dating Nobara, Yuta is still hung up on a girl who's been gone for over a decade, and Yuji is involved with someone he saved years ago. Is that about right?"

You nodded, feeling a bit deflated. "Yeah, pretty much. I know it sounds convoluted, but that's what I've pieced together."

Margaret took a deep breath, trying to regain her composure. "You've got it all wrong. None of them are dating anyone. They're all single and each of them has been trying to express their feelings for you."

Margaret's face was buried in her hands, and for a moment, the silence in the hallway was deafening. You stood there, slightly awkward, unsure of how to proceed.
