There were few things in the world that truly scared Yuta. For instance, he had punched a clown who had jumped out from behind a tree. Honestly, Yuta should have expected it. It was, after all, a haunted walkthrough.

He'd been banned for life.

But that was irrational. Something that wasn't a constant fear in the back of his mind. It was a one time slip up.

Death was also something that didn't scare him. There was nothing for him to be afraid of. It was inevitable. He'd seen it before. Many, many times over.

But there was one death he feared.

Yours. You were in constant danger. A borderline threat to yourself. Monsters - both human and curse - were out there, waiting for the right moment to pounce.

"Not now Rika."

Immediately the curse dropped the cat she held - no doubt about to do something foul.

Yuta sighed. "You know it's funny. I expected you to kill her by now."

Rika's form flickered, the shadows around her twisting and writhing as she glared at him. That's right. He could tell she was glaring at him. After years of being stuck together, he could read her like a book.

"Goodness," he laughed, "you've grown fond of her." He grinned. "I'm glad. You know, I've always been terrified that you'd hurt her. You never really did like me around people."

Rika's shadowy form pulsed with a mix of indignation and something softer, almost like annoyance.

"Do you care about her?"

Somehow, it almost seemed like Rika smiled. And that was confirmation enough for Yuta. That you would be safe. You would always be safe.

"You look tired."

Yuta blinked at you. "Just a long day," he replied, rubbing the back of his neck. The sunlight streaming through the window painted your face in soft hues, making you look more vibrant than ever.

You frowned slightly, your concern evident. "You've been pushing yourself too hard. You need to rest."

He chuckled, but it came out a bit strained. "Resting is for the weak, right?" He leaned against the wall, his playful smirk returning, but you could see through it.

"Not if you die from exhaustion. I wouldn't like that."

Yuta smiled and pressed a kiss to the skin of your cheek. "You're such a sweetheart. I promise I'm fine."

"I could hear you talking last night."

Immediately Yuta paused his movements. "You did?" He hummed thoughtfully, "What did you hear?"

You shrugged your shoulders and rocked back on your feet. "Nothing coherent. But I could hear you through the walls." You laughed, "Paper thin."

Yuta rubbed the back of his neck, a sheepish grin spreading across his face. "Guess I need to work on my late-night monologues."

"Or maybe just your volume control," you teased, trying to keep the mood light. But the concern in your eyes was unmistakable. "What were you talking about?"

He hesitated for a moment, the playful atmosphere flickering like a candle about to be extinguished. "Just... some stuff with Rika. You know how it gets sometimes. It's hard to turn off the worry."
