Seeing you lying in bed with the covers pulled up over your face wasn't exactly how Yuji expected to find you on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. But here he was.
"Hey (Y/n) . . ."
He could hear you groan something in response.
The boy took a couple steps forward and gripped the duvet. He pulled the cover slowly and your face was exposed.
"Err . . . you're really flushed."
You gave another garbled response.
Yuji frowned and pressed the back of his hand to your head. "Oh shit. You're boiling. You've definitely got a fever. Get this blanket off!"
Yuji swiftly threw the duvet aside and grabbed a nearby fan, setting it up on the bedside table and turning it on. He glanced around for anything that could help—water, medicine, anything.
"Stay with me, okay?" he said, his voice softer but filled with urgency. You barely managed to open your eyes, the heat making you feel dizzy.
Yuji fetched a glass of water from the kitchen and returned to your side, carefully lifting your head to help you sip. "Drink this, it'll help," he encouraged, his brow furrowed with worry.
You took a few sips, managing a weak nod in response. He kept his hand on your forehead, trying to gauge if the fan was making any difference.
"Just hang in there. I'm going to get some medicine," Yuji said, giving you a reassuring smile despite his own concern. He wasn't the best when it came to dealing with sick people - mainly because he didn't know what to do.
He dashed out of the room, returning quickly with a bottle of fever-reducing tablets and a thermometer.
"Here, take these," he said, handing you the pills with another sip of water. You struggled to follow his instructions, but Yuji was patient, helping you with each step.
After you took the medicine, he placed the thermometer under your tongue and waited. It beeped a moment later, and he checked the reading, his expression growing more anxious.
"Forty degrees Celsius. This is really high. We need to get you to a doctor if it doesn't go down soon," Yuji said, trying to keep his tone calm for your sake.
He set the thermometer down and grabbed a cool, damp washcloth from the bathroom. Gently, he placed it on your forehead. "I'll stay right here with you," he promised. "We'll get through this."
For the first time that visit, you managed a laugh. "You make it sound like I'm dying."
"You better not!" He gasped, "I'd perish without you."
You managed a weak smile at his dramatic response, feeling a little bit better just from his presence.
"What made you come over?"
"I figured I would swing by to bother you. I was bored."
You chuckled softly, despite the throbbing heat in your head. "I guess I'm lucky you decided to bother me today."
Yuji gave a sheepish grin. "Yeah, it turns out I'm pretty good at picking the worst times to show up. But seriously, I'm glad I did. I was worried when I saw you like this. You looked terrible."
You could see the genuine concern in his eyes, and it made you feel a bit better just knowing he cared so much. "I appreciate it. I didn't realize how bad it was until you got here."
"We should definitely keep an eye on it. If the fever doesn't go down soon, I'm calling for backup. Your health is not something I'm taking any chances with."
