Chapter 54
Claire's POVIt's been a week since Nat left.
One week down, three to go!
Nat and I were able to text throughout the day and most nights we spoke on the phone or FaceTimed. I had felt terrible after listening to her voice message the other day and that next morning I rang to apologised. It was unfair of me to be annoyed and to take that out on Nat, she was only trying to keep me safe because she loved me. I promised her I would stay at the compound from now on.
I had been trying to keep myself busy. I spent majority of the days doing the exact same thing. In the morning I worked out and swam a few laps. After a shower and getting ready for the day I would have breakfast with Wanda and then go practice the piano. Afterwards I would usually hang out with anyone who was free and after lunch I would go out by the lake and read. Most nights I would hangout with Kate and Yelena and help Wanda cook dinner, trying to stay with anyone as long as I could. Because at the end of the day I was alone in Nat's room. Where the loneliness felt like it was drowning me, like I was being weighed down. The nights alone also meant I was over thinking about hydra and then panicking about them taking me back.
Tonight was no different to all the others. I had just left Yelena's room where we were watching a movie and I was now heading to the kitchen.
"Hey Wands, what can I do to help?" I asked walking in to the kitchen.
"Hi there Claire, I'm just about done actually and then it just has to go in the oven. You can help me start cleaning up if you want" she suggested.
I made my way over to the sink to start cleaning the dishes and placing smaller things in the dishwasher. Whatever Wanda was making already smelt delicious.
"I have a question for you" Wanda spoke up from the other side of the kitchen.
I turned to her with a questioning look waiting for her to ask.
"Kate said last night while we were watching that movie that she was still trying to figure out who you got something for while you were shopping and what the something was. What was she talking about? More importantly who was she talking about?" Wanda said smiling "it's ok if you don't want to tell me".
I thought about the wording of my answer for a second. Wanda was my friend and I didn't like lying to her but it was more important to me to keep this relationship a secret because Nat had asked me to. She did say we could tell everyone when she got back from the mission so it would not be long until I could tell Wanda the truth. I knew Nat wasn't embarrassed by our relationship, she had explained to me that she wasn't ready to tell everyone earlier because she wanted to take the time to explore these feeling without others input. And I totally agreed with her. I was just going to have to keep it a secret for another three weeks.
"I did buy something for some one special to me. At the moment I won't say anything else though I'm sorry" I answered "but I will soon".
Wanda nodded.
"As long as your happy Claire that's all that matters" she smiled,
"I am very happy" I said. "Now tell me what is going on between you and vision because the tension is obvious".
Wanda laughed. "I hope there will be something going on with that soon".
We both giggled and kept talking in the kitchen while we waited for the food to cook.
After dinner I went up to Nat's room as she had sent a message earlier saying she could call for only a short time at 7:30 and it was now 7:25.
I waited eagerly for the call. Nat hadn't been able to call the last two nights because they had been out doing training at night. We had been able to text on and off during the day but I was looking forward to hearing her voice.
