Lingling pulled up on the driveway of their family home in a village at the heart of Bangkok. It was a busy night in the city as usual but the air was colder this time and the lake nearby was calm. However, the stars were hiding behind the clouds, probably a sign of the upcoming rain.

“Good evening, Khun Lingling.”

Lingling greeted their helper, handing them her car key, before proceeding inside. She has already moved out for about two years now, wanting a place nearer to the office, and maybe a little more independence.

Thinking it was a usual family dinner, Lingling was surprised to see that only her father was present at the table.

“Dad.” Lingling greeted her father with a warm smile.

“Lingling, come sit.”

“Where's Film and Milk?” Lingling asked as she sat down, looking around for her sisters.

“Film's abroad in a conference. She's one of the representatives from their law school. Milk went to have a sleepover in June's.” Her father,  Plai, answered as their food was being served.

Lingling nodded. She has not been involved enough with her sisters’ lives lately, nor updated with their whereabouts. She felt guilty for not knowing. She was just too busy at work especially with the upcoming deadlines. “I see.” She gave him a tight smile.

“How have you been, dear? Thank you for accepting my invitation to dinner.”

“Of course, Dad.” Lingling smiled softly. Her father only asked her to join dinner with them at least once a week before letting her move out. “And I'm doing fine. Thank you for asking. By the way, dad, we closed a deal with the supplier from Germany for our new machine at the factory. Hopefully, we'll get to finish the renovations before it arrive next month.”

Plai listened fondly as Lingling kept going about how her week went—the tasks she accomplished at the company, the problems they encountered and how they managed them, updates on sales and many more. Anyone listening to her would feel like working was her life.

“I'm proud of you, Lingling.” Her father said with a genuine proud smile while gently tapping her shoulder.

Hearing those words always made Lingling feel that every effort was worth it. “Thanks, dad.” She replied, holding her father's hand on her shoulder as well. “How about you? Is Milk giving you a hard time, Dad?” Jokingly, she asked.

Plai chuckled. “Milk is fine. She's still a little introverted but she said that has made some new friends.”

“Good.”

“Well…as for me, you know I had a heart attack few months back and—”

“Are you alright, Dad? Do you feel anything bad? Did the doctor say anything?”

Plai smiled at his daughter's apparent concern. “No, no, dear. I'm perfectly okay. I am well. You do not have to worry.” He said, and Lingling, despite still being worried, nodded. “But after the surgery, I thought, I should already make my will.”

Lingling's brows furrowed. As far as she could remember, her father mentioned that he has made a will already a couple of years back. "Didn't you make one years back, Dad?"

“Yes, but I had to make some changes. After the surgery, I had to rest…” He said, and despite not understanding where her father was going, Lingling nodded. “I was looking through old documents at my office and I came across this um—” He gestured his hands trying to find the words. “—your mother's writings…”

Lingling's face fell at the mention of her late mother.

“...so I made some changes in my will, and I want to discuss it with you, Lingling.”
