The sun was about to set, but Lingling was still buried among the pile of documents that she needed to read. Behind her, the skyline reflected the changing colors of the sky as it turned into shades of pink and orange.
It has been more than two weeks since that particular dinner with her father. She has not agreed on anything yet, but as the days went by, her options were becoming limited. Her friends had different opinions about it—Gap and Faye told her to stand her ground while Junji and Namtan said otherwise and just have to treat it as a business deal. As for Freen, she didn't have an opinion either.
“Khun Ling?”
Lingling didn't bother to look up as she was to focus on her task. She only did when her secretary, Nene, told her schedule.
“Is that tonight?” Lingling put her pen down neatly at the side of the document, closing the folder gently as she lifted her head to look at Nene. She saw her confirmation and sighed.
“I'll have the car ready downstairs, Khun Ling.” Nene bowed before leaving.
Lingling picked her pen up and tried to resume her work, but the thought of sitting through yet another awkward dinner bothered her. She rested her head against her clasped hands and sighed.
Meanwhile, Orm stared at herself in the mirror. She wore a ruffled v-neck cream-colored dress that matched her skin tone perfectly, her wavy honey brown hair cascading neatly down to her chest. For some reason, she felt nervous, and Kornnaphat Sethratanapong was never anxious about anything. It felt as if she was applying for a job. But she thought that maybe because it was Lingling who she would be meeting—one of the top young businesswomen in the country.
Orm let out a shaky breath, jumping up and down while shaking her arms. “You can do it. P'Ling seems nice. Don't need to worry.” She told herself repeatedly. "It will be okay. 'She's nice. She's—"
“Oi, N'Orm!”
Orm jumped a little, startled at Eclair's sudden interruption. “Phi! You surprised me. Gosh.” She said, clutching her chest.
“Hmm. You look like you're about to go into the ring.” Eclair laughed.
“Ay, Phi!” Orm pouted, hugging her cousin.
“Do you want to back out, huh Nong? I'm sure that uncle and aunty will understand.” Eclair offered, also hugging Orm. “But you know…the Kwong's also have investments in hospitals, I heard. We can get free derma consultations oi!” She added, clapping her hands excitedly.
Orm glared at her cousin, but the latter just laughed. “P'Eclair…do you think P'Ling agreed?”
“I guess so? I mean, we wouldn't meet them for dinner if not, don't you think so?”
“I guess.” Orm sighed.
“Now let's go.” Eclair patted Orm's shoulder before leaning back. “Uncle and aunty are waiting downstairs already.”
Orm nodded. She walked behind Eclair out of the room. She was less nervous now, but still can't help but be anxious about meeting her future wife.
After a fairly quiet ride along the streets of Bangkok, Orm and her family reached the Kwong's residence. Orm was amazed by how magnificent the landscape was as their mansion was adjacent to the lake at the heart of the city. They were welcomed by Plai, who Orm already met, with two other girls—Milk, who was wearing casual pants and a cardigan partnered with her prescription glasses, and Film, who was wearing a floral dress. The former stood awkwardly with a bashful smile while the latter stood confidently and smiling brightly.
