The whole week went by so fast. It was Friday already—only about 3 months remaining before the end of the stipulation for inheritance. Lingling went out for an early morning run with Junji, Namtan and Faye at the park. After reaching their goal, the group went to rest by the lake.
The sun was rising, a mix of yellow and orange colored the sky, and birds chirping as they flew by. The water was serene and the air was less humid.
“How's your engagement going?” Junji opened the topic, a dreaded one by Lingling.
Lingling ignored the question, focused on doing some arm stretches to cool down, so Namtan answered for her. “They're not engaged…yet.” She glanced at her future sister-in-law before chugging her bottled water.
“Why not?” Junji asked, now also doing cool down stretches. Lingling gave her a look as if saying ‘seriously?’.
“It will be a waste if you don't marry her.” Faye, who was sitting on the bench, chirped in. “I know I told you to stand your ground, but maybe this is the best thing to do in this situation. I mean…besides her being insanely gorgeous, she's already there, Nong…Your father knows her. You already met her family…unless you want us to find you a random person to marry.”
“Agree.” Junji nodded.
“P'Faye has a point, P'Ling. You can just treat this like any other business deals you had. The important thing is that you'll get your shares by the end of it.”
The three of them waited for Lingling's reply, but the girl just continued stretching, eyes closed this time. Faye sighed and stood up while Namtan shrugged her shoulders while wiping her sweat.
“Or maybe you still want—”
Lingling suddenly stopped.
Faye gave Junji a pointed look, thankfully she stopped.
Lingling let out a forceful breath before turning to face her friends. Her hair was sticking to the side of her face.
Faye frowned at Junji who mouthed ‘what?’, while Namtan had no idea what exactly it was about.
“I'll think about it.”
That caught the three of them by surprise.
“I have to run some more.” Lingling with a serious expression on her face, nodded and started running once again.
The three friends were left by the lake. Namtan was amused, while Faye and Junji exchanged looks.
Lingling kept running, earphones plugged in. She was sweating profusely.
“And it's not like you have someone to keep fighting it. Plus it's just three years, P'Ling. If it doesn't work out, then okay, you'll have the majority of the shares without spending a single dime…but if it does, then…”
She remembered what Freen told her in the car as well as what Faye said earlier.
“Your father knows her. You already met her family…unless you want us to find you a random person to marry.”
Her pace wind down as their words kept repeating in her mind. She looked up, eyes closed. Her chest was rising and falling slowly, trying to catch her breath.
Meanwhile, Orm's alarm has rang twice already, but the girl was still deep in slumber. Third time, and Eclair barged in.
“N'Orm! Wake up!”
“Five minutes.”
“No!” Eclair was stressed. “Your alarm woke everyone up in this neighborhood except you.”
