“What are we doing here, Nong?”
Lingling turned around, smiling so wide. “This is it, P'Engfa. This is what I wanted to show you.”
Engfa stood in her spot, a few meters away from where Lingling was standing. After class, her friend told her she wanted to show her something important. She didn't know they were going to an old playground in the middle of Bangkok.
It was sunset then. The sky looked like a canvas of pink, orange and yellow streaks with the shadow of the retreating sun casting over them.
They were fifteen then.
Lingling looked around with a longing gaze. Her mother has been gone for about three years then. It has been difficult for her, but somehow having someone like Engfa, who would stay and listen to her, made it somehow easier. “My mom used to bring me and Film here.” She smiled a little, a wishful one.
At that moment, Engfa realized why the place was important to Lingling. Taking in a deep breath, she smiled and walked towards her friend.
“It's my first time coming here again.” Lingling's smile turned into a sad one.
Engfa nodded and put her hand on top of Lingling’s head. “I'm sure your mom's happy that you finally came back here, N'Lingling.” She said, making the younger one genuinely smile again.
Back to the current time.
It was two days before the 100th day of Anong's death. That morning, Lingling woke up feeling nervous. It was the day the decision of the Manoban cousins would be announced. It was a huge deal to her and for the group, and it was making her feel on edge for a few days now.
“You're nervous about the bidding, aren't you?” Orm asked while running her palm down Lingling’s coat then fixing her collar.
Lingling took a deep breath and nodded. “Kind of.” She chuckled.
“You'll get it.” Orm gave her wife a peck then. “Hm? I'm sure of it.”
“I really hope so.” Lingling then circled her arm around Orm's waist, gently pulling her closer. “What time is your flight again, Baobao?”
“It's 4:30. Mom asked me and P'Eclair to buy the things we'll use for the ceremony first.” Orm answered. Her parents asked her to come earlier to the province to help prepare for the 100th day anniversary of her grandmother's death. “We'll celebrate tomorrow once you come to Buriram, okay?”
Lingling smirked at the sexual undertone of her wife's statement. “Why not now?” She lightly squeezed the side of her body just below her breast, making her squirm. “Huh?”
Orm let out a giggle and squeezed Lingling's cheeks. “You have to go to work. You're the boss. You can't be late, remember?” When her wife pouted, she went in to press multiple chaste kisses on her lips. “Go work for me, Lingling Kwong. I'm expensive now, you know?”
Lingling chuckled. “Yes, Mrs. Kwong.” She leaned in and nuzzled her nose against Orm's. “I'll go now. I'll see you tomorrow, yeah?”
“See you, Bubu.”
Lingling went to work then. Her day started out like usual. She read reports and reviewed some documents. She had an online meeting with their importers in Myanmar and Indonesia at around 10 AM. Then, she had another meeting with the staff of the logistics department. For lunch, Khun Pithaya, the member of the board, invited her for lunch with Pentai to discuss his proposed new policy. Upon returning to the office, she resumed reviewing the files.
